Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited IAAF Road Race Label Events, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Gifu and Brčko (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Czechia

[edit]

Hi Koristka! I re-reverted you on the change from Czechia to Czech Republic. The word Czechia is rarely used in English (see Name of the Czech Republic) and we need to use the names that readers most commonly understand and that are most appropriate. Wikipedia is based upon common usage – it is not designed to promote new usage. I don't see anything wrong with using Czechia, but certainly in the UK it is as rare as Hellas. SFB 23:57, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sillyfolkboy! Sorry, the name Czechia has been officially recommended by Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a one-word common name for the Czech Republic. I agree it is a point-of-view thing. Still using 'the Czech Republic' instead of Czechia is as clumsy as using 'the Russian Federation' for Russia or 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' instead of United Kingdom or just UK. I would be much happier if you upgraded the article, not just mechanically replaced Czechia by Czech Republic. Koristka (talk) 21:36, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps it is clumsy for you as English is not your first language, but for any English-only speaker Czechia is highly unusual, if not unintelligible. Compare usage on the BBC of Czechia and Czech Republic. Note the huge difference in number and the fact that virtually all usages of Czechia occurring on the site occur in the user comments, never news coverage. You can say Czechia is the official name, but then again so is Polska – but that is rarely used or understood by native English speakers. On English Wikipedia it is Poland. You must write in the language of the wikipedia that you are writing for. Please see the Manual of Style. Thanks. SFB 19:49, 20 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I admit English is not my native language. However, since I have studied in the UK and passed the CPE Cambridge Exam I believe I have some English-language feeling. On a more technical note, Polska is not an equivavlent of Czechia. Polska is a one-word name of the country in Polish. So in Polish it is 'Rzeczpospolita Polska' (long name) or 'Polska' (short name). The English equivalents are 'the Republic of Poland' (long name) and 'Poland' (short name). Respective sets of country names are Česká republika - Česko - the Czech Republic - Czechia or Slovenská republika - Slovensko - the Slovak Republic - Slovakia. So there is no need to use 'Polska' in English since 'Poland' is the right term. Koristka (talk) 18:24, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Norwegian Society of Actuaries requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
