New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Epicgenius/Archive/2022,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Speedy deletion nomination of Omny

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Omny requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:29, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

GA reviewing?

Hi -- I hope you don't mind the inquiry, but I am curious about something. I see you have several hundred GAs, but have only reviewed 44. Can I ask why? Your prose is solid and you would be an excellent reviewer. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 00:39, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

@Mike Christie, I don't mind you asking at all. Basically, I often spend way too much time on reviewing a GAN, since I tend to nitpick at the prose and coverage. As a result, it often takes me a few weeks to review a GAN. I might start reviewing more GANs in the future, though. – Epicgenius (talk) 00:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, it never hurts to improve an article, of course, but GA only requires prose that is "clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience". Maybe it's because you also submit at FAC a lot, which has higher prose standards? My own feeling is that at GAN it's best to grit your teeth and let the article pass unless the prose is actually confusing or wrong in some way.
It would be great if you did review more; even if you only reviewed as many as you submitted that would be a big help with the backlog. I'll continue to review your work regardless, but I have to say you have so many at GAN at the moment that I'm skipping yours, now that I've reviewed a couple of them, in order to get to the other nominators below you on the list. I'll come back to your nominations over the next week or so if my present burst of reviewing energy continues. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 00:48, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

For templates like this, is the plan to move single-article invocations to mainspace? Cards84664 17:11, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

@Cards84664, yes, that is the plan. Per WP:TMPG, Templates that violate the guidelines on this page, have poorly defined function, are redundant, become orphaned or used on only one page, or violate any Wikipedia policies may be nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion. It's easier to just substitute single-use templates. – Epicgenius (talk) 18:07, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Hersheypark

That was a lot of bold edits but if the sources really exist this is going to be great for those pages! Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm going to improve all these pages to at least C class in the near future, don't worry. The sources all exist on newspapers.com or other websites and, luckily, most of these aren't trivial coverage. There are plenty of sources available on Hersheypark's history, too. So yeah, it would be great for those pages. Epicgenius (talk) 16:38, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Thats great! Please find your way to the talk pages with those sources in the next few hours, some of them currently have no independent WP:RS so they're sorely needed. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
You pinged me to nine separate discussions, so a few hours isn't sufficient. I have provided sources for three of these topics and will provide sources for the remainder when time permits. Epicgenius (talk) 18:06, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, I thought because you'd obviously looked up the sources before removing the tags so they'd be close at hand (it didn't take you much more than an hour to vet all those pages before reming the tag after all). If it takes longer thats no worry, I just wont be able to respond for a minute. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 19:18, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
I didn't keep the sources close at hand because I closed the tabs after I read them, but I did plan to add these sources later. However, I conducted a search earlier today to determine whether there was significant coverage for each of these topics. I did consider Pennsylvania newspapers as contributing to each topic's notability. In cases where I couldn't establish any significant coverage at all, I endorsed your tagging on at least two instances: Project 2012 (Hersheypark) (which I merged because it was completely non-notable) and Breakers Edge Water Coaster. – Epicgenius (talk) 19:36, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
The larger concern, as I noted below, is that perhaps your vetting of the article to begin with isn't very thorough. In the time it takes you to tag the articles, you could have found the necessary sourcing to satisfy GNG. Roller Soaker literally took me less than 5 minutes. --GoneIn60 (talk) 20:02, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) A "few hours" is completely unreasonable. If speed is a primary concern, editors are encouraged to be WP:BOLD and fix it themselves. Also see WP:NEXIST and WP:CONRED which advises that you take the time to search for sources yourself, especially if your intention is to nominate for AfD or to tag the article. If it can be reasonably assumed that sources do in fact exist, and you are engaged in a conversation with another editor willing to assist, then we shouldn't be in a rush to tag or delete. Also note that one of the articles you questioned already had secondary sources cited at the time you tried to tag it. --GoneIn60 (talk) 18:33, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Note that I did do a search before adding each tag, I only tagged articles which did not satisfy WP:GNG based on that search. I'm in no rush, unless its a BLP or promotional I don't believe in nominating a page for deletion until its been tagged for a number of years... Preferably north of 10. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 19:18, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Not sure how you're searching, but you may want to consider using Google Books. A quick search there for "roller soaker" "hersheypark" produced numerous hits in books as well as magazines, such as Funworld and Popular Mechanics. Armed with that knowledge, we wouldn't be tagging the article with {{Notability}}. And in the case of Great Bear, there were existing secondary sources in the article to begin with – a clue that it was likely already compliant with GNG. --GoneIn60 (talk) 19:50, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Help me out here, I'm not seeing any significant coverage in that google books search results. The Popular Mechanics and Funworld coverage appear to be just passing mentions. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 15:53, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
WP:GNG says "'Significant coverage' means that sources address the subject directly in detail, so no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention but it need not be the main topic of the source material." Popular Mechanics has a paragraph about Roller Soaker, which, while short, describes several key details of the ride. If you are confused, I can explain how that meets the definition of significant coverage and how that is a secondary source. – Epicgenius (talk) 16:09, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Thats a stand-alone paragraph outside of an article with no attributed author which reads as if its written from a press release. No? PM's habit of churning press releases appears to have been noted at RSN. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 16:37, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Regarding "no attributed author", if you look closely, you can see the name "Paul Ruben" on the lower left corner. Additionally, this does not read like a press release to me. If it were, the paragraph would have put the name of the park or the company front and center, but Hersheypark is mentioned only once in the third sentence, and the manufacturer (Setpoint) is not even mentioned until the second-to-last paragraph. If this were a press release, it's an extremely awful one that utterly fails at advertising either the park or the company. That is beside the point, though, because there are several other sources I pointed out on the talk page.
Also, I honestly thought you were confused about how that constituted a secondary source. I apologize since it seems that is not the case. – Epicgenius (talk) 18:43, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
If you scour any source with a long history, you're bound to come across some questionable coverage over time. The same can be said of LAT and NYT. Popular Mechanics is like TV Guide or any other entertainment publication. It won't always be reliable for all content it covers, but amusement tech is in its wheelhouse. The TechWatch section of PM is full of 1-2 paragraph news snippets, so the short excerpt about Roller Soaker isn't really out of place or straying from the norm. Technical details are given, and the author contrasts the ride's underwhelming specs on paper to the actual ride experience. This analysis, albeit brief, qualifies as one step removed from a typical press release. Then sources like this one are now listed on Roller Soaker's talk page. It's a done deal. --GoneIn60 (talk) 08:02, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Brookfield Properties

Hi Epicgenius. Thanks for getting involved at WP:COIN and for explaining to me where I went wrong in attempting to rename categories with "Brookfield Properties Retail" in their names! I hope you might be able to help with a related matter: There are still dozens of articles that refer to "Brookfield Properties Retail" or "Brookfield Properties Retail Group" in their infoboxes and elsewhere, incorrectly suggesting that those are standalone companies, when in fact the company's name is "Brookfield Properties" and it has within it a "retail group" (lowercase) that manages retail properties.

The same problem exists for dozens more articles referring to "Brookfield Office Properties," which has not been the name of the company since 2017.

I would be willing to spend the time manually changing all these instances to "Brookfield Properties" (except when the names are mentioned in a historical context), but I wonder if you would be able to do so in a more expedient and error-free way. Plus, I have been discouraged on my user talk page from making direct edits to Brookfield-related articles. Thank you! Claudiailagan (talk) 13:38, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

@Claudiailagan, no problem, and thanks for the heads-up. I see from these search results that there are some articles that link directly to Brookfield Properties Retail Group, so someone with the AutoWikiBrowser tool can probably fix these links easily. That search also contains instances where "Brookfield Properties Retail Group" or "Brookfield Properties Retail" is just mentioned as plain text. There are only about 93 articles with these two phrases, however, so it should not take too long for someone to fix the pages.
In addition, according to these search results, 53 pages contain the name "Brookfield Office Properties". Again, these should be relatively easy to fix.
On the one hand, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest strongly discourages you from making these edits yourself. On the other hand, as you're an employee of the company, you would probably be in the best position to determine which instances of Brookfield Properties' old names are "historical" and shouldn't be changed. I would recommend that you first look through these two lists of search results to determine which of these are "historical" mentions. Afterward, you could go to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks and ask someone to change the links to Brookfield's old names for you, mentioning that you have a conflict of interest. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:21, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

DYK for 17 State Street

On 29 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 17 State Street, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 17 State Street, near the southern end of New York City's Manhattan Island, was described as "quite literally a beacon for Lower Manhattan"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/17 State Street. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 17 State Street), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
