The Henle difficulty ranking is a "level of difficulty" scale for musical works developed by the German music publishing house G. Henle Verlag.^[1] The publishing house's entire repertoire for piano (author: Rolf Koenen), violin (Ernst Schliephake), flute (András Adorján), and cello has been classified into difficulty levels from 1–9: Easy (1–3), Medium (4–6), and Difficult (7–9). The classifications are intended to make it easier to find suitable pieces for a particular level of ability.

Examples

For example, Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude in C major from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, has been classified as "moderately easy" (grade 2 out of 9),

and the Toccata in C major, Op. 7 by Robert Schumann as "very difficult" (9 out of 9).

Chopin's Étude Op. 25, No. 6, also called the Double Thirds Étude, is considered one of the hardest of Chopin's 24 Études, ranking the highest level of difficulty.^[2]
