Life

[edit]

Dr. A.D. Grover  was born on 1st. March 1928 in Mianwali (West Punjab) to Father Shri Bhoga Ram  & Mother Smt.Piari Bai. His primary education (up to 10th. grade) was in  Okara (Distt. Montgomry), later he went to Lahore and joined D.A.V. College and passed his F.Sc. He was admitted to Balak Ram Medical College (Lahore) but after partition in 1947, he continued his medical education in King George Medical College, Lucknow.  He passed his M.B.B.S. with honors in 1951 and M.S.Ophthalmology  in 1955 from the same college. He married Smt. Pushpa Miglani in 1954. He finally settled in Chandigarh (1960) and breathed his last on 7th. October 1987. Mrs. Pushpa Grover also since demised (7 January 1929 - 23 May 2005).

Professional life

[edit]

After a short stint in Jaunpur, Sitapur Eye Hospital in U.P., he joined the then renowned Gandhi Eye Hospital, Aligarh as Asstt. Professor incharge of the research wing from 1956 to 1960. Here he carried out extensive research on trachoma, then a major blinding eye disease. His work on Molluscum Contagiosum was acknowledged in the famous Ophthalmology Book series of Sir Stewart Duke Elder. He was called to help set up the fledgling Eye Department at P.G.I. Chandigarh by Dr.Tulsi Dass in 1960. However in 1962,  over a bureaucratic tiff which wanted a sacrifice of his values and principles, he resigned from  P.G.I. and started the first private eye hospital in Chandigarh.[1][2] It was a very bold step at that time, but it was a decision he never regretted.

Key positions held

[edit]
  • Founder President of the Chandigarh Ophthalmological Society (Founded on March 20, 1985).[3]
  • He was the President of Indian Medical Association, Chandigarh State Branch 1981 – 82.
  • Medical Director & Chairman - Grover Eye Laser & ENT Hospital.

Philanthropy

[edit]

He held numerous eye operation camps[4] in Punjab, Haryana & Himachal Pradesh. Later his sphere of  social work even extended up to the tribal areas near Ranchi (Chhota Nagpur, Lohardaga & Khunti)  where in 1983 the tribals came to know for the first time that cataract was a curable blindness. Despite having suffered a massive heart attack, Dr.A.D.Grover used to go from hut to hut in difficult jungle terrain to convince the tribals that cataract is a curable blindness and not a divine curse so that the elderly blinded by cataract who were just discarded by their society and thrown out to die were treated and reunited with their family. Such was an impact of his missionary  zeal that Dayanand Foundation (D.A.V.)  is carrying on his noble mission even today and has established hospital there in his memory and in the memory[5] of late Shri. N.D.Grover[6] (Founder & Principal of D.A.V.College Abohar 1965)[7], his brother and saintly “Mahatma” National Director of D.A.V. Public Schools Eastern Zone[8]
