The Hollies' Greatest Hits (1968 West German album)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hollies' Greatest Hits is a 1968 West German greatest hits collection by British pop group The Hollies, released by Hansa Records, catalog number 85816-IT. This complements an earlier hits package issued by West German EMI affiliate Odeon which covered the years 1963-1966, this album focuses from the beginning of 1967 until late 1968.

This album is often sought out by collectors due to several factors, not only being the LP source of two songs issued only in West Germany ("Like Every Time Before" and "Blowin' In The Wind"), but also the only true stereo vinyl source for "Everything Is Sunshine", "Do The Best You Can", "All The World Is Love", "Signs That Will Never Change", "Like Every Time Before", and "Blowin' In The Wind".

The version of "Blowin' In The Wind" presented here features a harmony vocal by Graham Nash, being among the last tracks he recorded with the group as an active member.

It was also a preview for an upcoming Hollies project, an album of Bob Dylan songs. The following year, with Terry Sylvester replacing Nash, new vocals were recorded for the Dylan project, including this song. This version was not issued in the UK until 1990, and not issued in the US until 1993.

Although "Everything Is Sunshine", "Do The Best You Can", "All The World Is Love", and "Signs That Will Never Change" were reissued on a 1978 UK LP, The Other Side Of The Hollies (Parlophone PMC 7176), they were issued in mono. "Like Every Time Before" was issued in the UK on a rarities album in 1988; "Everything Is Sunshine" was issued in true stereo by the group's US label, Epic Records, in 1990. "Do the Best You Can" and "Signs That Will Never Change" were issued on a US compilation in 1993, but surprisingly, "All The World Is Love" had never been issued in true stereo outside of Germany until 2011, as part of a 6-CD retrospective.
