Automatic calculations

[edit]

The calculations I added for area and density are enabled if 'autocalc' is not null. It uses 'population', 'area land' (for sq. meters), 'area land km' (for sq. kilometers), and 'area land mi' (for sq. miles) to calculate density (in both sq. mi and sq. km). And it also uses 'area water', 'area water km', and 'area water mi' to calculate areas. Only one land and one water area needs to be specified. Examples:

  • |autocalc=yes|area land=1119749578|area water=7004395|population=16745|
  • |autocalc=yes|area land km=1119.75|area water km=7.00|population=16745|
  • |autocalc=yes|area land mi=432.3|area water mi=2.7|population=16745|

Mike 05:01, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the area section doesn't display correctly. See the counties of North Carolina (Beaufort County, North Carolina), for example). --Sir48 14:01, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to get it to work on your Beaufort example and I got a bunch of errors too. I think that in the future, I'll have my bot go though the 3,036 pages that transclude this template and standardize and format all the parameter names (and their values). This will make autocalc'ing much easier. —MJCdetroit 17:43, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Should we make this bot request now? Timneu22 23:26, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No need; it is my bot and it's approved for such a task. However, I may not be able to program it before December. I'll see what I can do. —MJCdetroit 00:33, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with this... this template is pretty complex; it may be very difficult to get the cleanup 100% automated. Timneu22 23:52, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like I will have to roll back Mike's changes to simplify the code and have the code pick one or the other sq mi or km2 to convert based on what is available in the particular infobox. —MJCdetroit 02:59, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the bot is ready. What I am going to do is to edit the template to give the template better standardized parameter names (based on other templates). The bot will go through all the pages and change area to either area_total_sq_mi (if sq mi are present) or area_total_km2 (if only km² are present). It will make other similar changes. It will also go through and raw format the pop, density and area fields. This will make auto calc for all pages easily done from a central location—here. —MJCdetroit 03:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've got Detroiterbot going through the pages now. I've previewed about 50 pages and everything looks good. The formatting of the numbers will be fixed tomorrow. Some of the pages may have an "Expression Error" until the bot can fix it. All the pages should have their names standardized within a few hours.—MJCdetroit 05:37, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the some area and density fields. See doc page for whats left. For the new fields, only enter data in an unformatted fashion, i.e. no commas; 1000 and not 1,000. Some additional clean up of pages will still be needed. —MJCdetroit 04:44, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't area_water_sq_mi = !-- Will convert automatically -- be removed from the doc, if it is determined automatically? Timneu22 11:39, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I reworded that. It was supposed to be for all area fields. —MJCdetroit 13:27, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I'm still a little confused. Which of these fields is mandatory? I mean, if I'm creating a new page, can't I just put in sq_mi and therefore the km2 will be filled in automatically, or vice versa?
| area_total_sq_mi =
| area_total_km2 =
| area_land_sq_mi  = <!--ALL AREA fields: ENTER in RAW format only, i.e. 10000 and NOT 10,000-->
| area_land_km2 =
| area_water_sq_mi = <!-- ALL AREA fields: Units will convert automatically; km² to sq mi & vise versa-->
| area_water_km2 =
| area percentage =
Thanks again. Timneu22 18:38, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. If there's a better way to word that then by all means please reword it.
For an example that has only English measurements see Jefferson County, New York; for a metric only example see Dallas County, Texas. However, the reality is that because of the way that the infobox was developed and has developed over time most infoboxes seem to be mixed with the areas entered in square miles and and the density per square kilometer. In any case the infobox will always display square miles first then (km²). —MJCdetroit 02:58, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking that we just remove the overlapping parameters altogether. For instance, remove the English stuff from here, and the user can only input metric...then the page will display both. It probably doesn't matter, though — I'm pretty sure every US county is using this template (well, 95%+), so there probably won't be many pages where this template gets added. Timneu22 10:52, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Error!

[edit]

I randomly went to Lincoln County, Nevada and saw an infobox error. I hope you get a chance to take a look. Timneu22 (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I found the cause of the error: the "|" was missing from this line: density_sq_mi = |. Is it possible that the BOT missed this stuff? The "good way" to do templates is to add pipes at the front of the line. This page had the pipe at the end — could this formatting style cause the error on several other pages? Timneu22 (talk) 02:24, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into it. It's an easy fix to add the pipe if it is missing. —MJCdetroit (talk) 13:13, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Courthouse Image

[edit]

I'd like to propose the optional image of the County Courthouse as a variable within the template. It would serve to beautify the article and have a visual representation of the county. --Ichabod (talk) 03:05, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe this is necessary or worthwhile, as not all counties have a good-looking courthouse. You can just add the image to the article right below the this infobox, it looks good there. Timneu22 (talk) 13:39, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's why it would be an optional part of the infobox. I realize many counties don't have attractive courthouses, but I believe in far many more the courthouse is almost a de facto symbol of the county itself, similar to a capitol building of a country. — Michael J 21:56, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't we just have an "other image"... would that work? Maybe it is a courthouse, maybe it's a police station, maybe it's a tree... Timneu22 (talk) 22:03, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
<Ahem> I was going to add this but this template is locked? I'll figure it out.Timneu22 (talk) 22:05, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
DONE. New variables added to the template:
  • ex image - the name of the "extra" image
  • ex image size - defaults to 200 if not specified
  • ex image cap - caption of the extra image
Let me know if you see any issues with this. I updated Montgomery County, Tennessee to show the courthouse within the infobox. Timneu22 (talk) 14:15, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. I've already gone in and replaced a handful of ones. It is too bad that the variables won't automatically appear within each article's entry. Maybe a bot could be geared to do this. --Ichabod (talk) 23:03, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Louisiana and Alaska do not use counties. Calling flags "county flags" is inaccurate and a slightly irksome. I suggest changing the text to just "flag". ~~----

Small

[edit]

editprotected

The Named For field really doesn't need to be small. I'm watching this page if you're not sure. Reywas92Talk 02:07, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't necessarily agree with that. Sometimes, "named for" has a one- or two-sentence description. Smallness helps in that situation. Timneu22 (talk) 15:48, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, but those I've seen only had the name, which can and should be full size. In case there's a description, the small tag can be manually added,. Reywas92Talk 16:45, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel strongly about it one way or the other. I tend to agree with you, however. Timneu22 (talk) 17:56, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map size parameter

[edit]

Would it be possible to have a parameter that overrides the default map size? For counties like New Castle County, Delaware, the map is rather big, and it would be useful to be able to reduce its size. Replacing the 200px in the Image part with something like {200px} would work. Tompw (talk) (review) 11:25, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Was that map changed recently? I don't remember this issue from before. Almost all the maps fit at 200px; we decided not to allow the parameter for consistency: you could end up with Sussex County at one size and Kent County at another. Honestly, I haven't figured out why that map looks so awkward — Sussex County, New Jersey doesn't have this problem, but its state map is about the same. I'll look into it. Timneu22 (talk) 16:48, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Founded" not applicable description for most counties

[edit]

I asked about this once a while back. The term "founded" is really not applicable to most counties, which are administrative subdivisions of a state rather than settlements "founded" by some group of people. More typically counties were first "set off" while remaining attached to an existing county for administrative purposes and then at a later date county government was organized. Would it be possible to use less prescribed fields in this template, analogous to the generic "established_title" and "established_date" in Infobox Settlement? olderwiser 11:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a need to change the parameter, as this would require edits to all articles incorporating this template. I do agree that there's a purpose for an "established title" type thing to make the word "Founded" display as something else. Timneu22 (talk) 16:50, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Saint" Counties

Motto or Slogan

[edit]

I think I would be a good idea to add a new section to the Infobox stating county's slogan or motto. For example, Miami-Dade County, Florida's slogan is Delivering Excellence Every Day It would be nice to put it in the Infobox.  iDosh!  talk? 18:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sold on this one yet. This template was in use for a long time before someone said, "we need a county flag parameter". This one made sense, as many counties probably have a flag. Do alot of counties really have a motto? Is this common? Timneu22 (talk) 13:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seal Size

[edit]

I have noticed that the size of the seal in these info boxes are proportionally small. In particular, the seal in Maui County, Hawaii caught my eye when I wasn't able to read the text in seal when it was in the box. Then I confirmed my suspicions in Orange County, California. In both cases, the source image is larger. Is there anyway to change this? Thanks! --travisthurston+ 17:12, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Free labels

[edit]

I want to add the motto of the City and County of Honolulu to that county/city's infobox, but I need some free labels. Does anyone wish to add a free label code in the infobox so I can add the motto and the mayor to the infobox? WhisperToMe (talk) 00:32, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the code I want to add:

  • County skyline: <td colspan="2" style="text-align: center; padding: 0.7em 0.8em 0.7em 0.8em;"> {{#if:{}|<small>{}</small>}} </td>
  • County motto: <!-- ***** Motto ***** --> {{#if:{}| <tr class="mergedrow"> <td colspan="2" align="center">Motto: {}</td> </tr>

This is so I can have City and County of Honolulu use the county template but have city-like features as well. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:17, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

editprotected

The infobox implementation only allows a figure of the population density per square kilometre. I understand the reason for not entering the density per square mile as well; instead, it is automatically calculated. However, on counties with low population densities, the default behaviour of rounding the calculated value of pop/sq mi to the nearest integer results in a value of zero for this statistic (refer to Kenedy County, Texas.) Is there a way that will allow at least two significant figures in the calculated value?

Alternately, the infobox already contains entry for population and land area. How about just calculating these density figures automatically, for both sq mi and sq km, and have the code for the infobox to ignore any manual entry for either figure?

Need a bot for cleanup

[edit]

I think we need a bot to do some cleanup. According to this, the following pages link to these non-existent census years:

United States Census, 2005 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2006 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2007 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2008 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2009 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2004 (redirect page) (links)
United States Census, 2002 (redirect page) (links)

So a bot should do this:

  1. Find any page that has the "census yr" parameter that is not divisble by 10 (i.e., one of the links above, and others)
  2. Switch that parameter name (not value) to "census estimate yr"
  3. If all the redirects listed above (and others) have zero pages pointing to them, delete the redirects.

From what I could tell, the redirects were all from people using the county templates incorrectly. Timneu22 (talk) 12:10, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category: Missing U.S. County Infobox

[edit]

Is there a Category indicating counties that are missing the infobox? This might help in tagging county articles for cleanup later. -- Ichabod (talk) 00:03, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of one, but at some point (years ago) I remember thinking that 100% of them had this infobox. A bot could be requested to find anything without one. Timneu22 (talk) 11:33, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since the current layout, colors, font size, and appearance of Template:Infobox U.S. state is similar to Template:Infobox settlement, I would also prefer that Template:Infobox U.S. County also look sort of similar to those two. To me, it seems out of place that, for example, the appearance and colors of the infobox for Cook County, Illinois look very different than those of either Illinois or Chicago. I mean, shouldn't the infoboxes of all these U.S. government levels and divisions all look sort of alike? Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:07, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a hypothetical example on the right: Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:24, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Any objections? I probably won't get around to working on the changes until late December 2009. So it's the time to speak up now (although I can't see any reasonable argument against being consistent since the current look of Template:Infobox U.S. state and Template:Infobox settlement has been around for months now). Timneu22 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can re-add them, but it is often helpful for an editor to get an idea of what the template does just by looking at it. I agree it looks ugly with the redlink - could I just hide that image or do you want the whole lot hidden? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:40, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say to hide the whole thing, like it used to. If you really want to show it, you could include the "sample" subpage (there's already a link to it", but that may not even be necessary. I'm pretty sure that when people use this template, they know what it will look like. Further, I think that around 99% of the counties are using this already, so it's not going to be added too much in the future. Showing it in the template namespace isn't helpful in this case. Alternate Infobox

[edit]

Vermont is unique (relatively, if not absolutely) among US states in that it does not use the term county seat to identify that municipality which is the administrative center for that county. In fact, there is no county government in Vermont to speak of, except for a Superior Court and the Sheriff. Be that as it may, we call it shire town.

Thus, the use of the U.S. Counties infobox on Vermont Counties pages, forcing the use of the term "seat," is downright inaccurate.

How does one go about creating an infobox reflecting the accurate term? A minimum of effort is necessary: it can be a direct copy of the U.S. Counties infobox with just that term changed. --Mfwills (talk) 00:09, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Display issues with area

[edit]

On my screen, infoboxes often display incorrectly when it comes to area because the total, land and water areas usually break over two lines (the square miles on the first line and the square kilometers on the second). There are therefore six lines in the right hand column. However, in the left hand column, the words "Total", "Land" and "Water" appear on the first three lines, meaning that the word "Land" appears next to the total area in kilometers and the word "Water" appears next to the land area in miles. This is happening when I look at Ottawa County, Ohio, for example. Is there a fix? --Lincolnite (talk) 18:21, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Must be related to your current web browser and/or system, because I do not see it similarly word wrapping on mine even if I shrink the window as much as I can. I have added a few explicit non-breaking spaces to see if it helps. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:03, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot reproduce this problem either, but I think I've seen something similar happen in older browsers. If the non-breaking space approach does not help, it is always possible to re-write the area section of the template so it is organized as three table rows (for total, land, and water areas; without separators), as opposed to currently used one row which relies on internal line breaks.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); February 28, 2012; 14:42 (UTC)

Largest City?

[edit]

I'm confused about the "largest city" parameter, both in terms of "largest" and "city". Does "largest" mean area or population? Does "city" mean "municipality" or does it only mean an actual city, say to the exclusion of a borough, town, township or village (at least where I come from in New Jersey)? And what about a place like New York State which has towns as an administrative division with villages inside of it, so that you have Hempstead in Nassau County, New York that has a population over 750,000, while all other cities are far smaller? I'm sure that in many cases the largest city is an actual city that has the most people and the largest area of any place in the county, but why not have parms for both? And why not include a value of population for most populous and a value for area for largest area, in addition to a link to the place? These questions are not hypothetical, as I've seen some slow-motion edit wars that revolve around these issues. Alansohn (talk) 18:32, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RadioKAOS  – Talk to me, Billy 02:37, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

edit protected is used "to request an edit of the corresponding fully protected page", with certain conditions; since Template:Infobox U.S. county is fully-protected, edit protected would be appropriate for use by experienced registered users, as well as IPs/newbies. I suspect you're thinking of edit semi-protected which is used to request an edit that a non-autoconfirmed user cannot do. Your post at #Leader field needed? above doesn't have any specifics (so edit protected isn't appropriate for that) but appears to be more of an observation. This template talk page doesn't have many watchers, and some of those who are watching it, like myself, are just watching to see how their own posts fared, and have little or no interest in the posts of others. You might get a better response by posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. counties or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:13, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When I first left the request last year, I also checked the project talk page, only to see that it was similiarly devoid of life. When I checked back fairly recently, I noticed that this problem wasn't necessarily limited to my post, as other requests had been ignored, too. I still see a need for this, however. I assume there is also an equivalent in the borough presidents of New York City. That wouldn't apply here, since the county names redirect to the borough names, and they use Infobox settlement, but it still is evidence in my mind that counties or county-equivalents have notable leaders which should be included in an infobox. Red Slash 00:10, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I do see the extra blank line: but all infoboxes have recently been converted to be based on Lua, and I strongly suspect that change to be the cause; unfortunately, I can't be sure, nor can I fix it, since the working of Lua templates is impenetrable (have a look at Module:Infobox). I shall inform those responsible. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:58, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't a Lua problem - this template doesn't even use infobox. There is a new line just before the code {| class="infobox geography vcard" style="width:23em;" at the top of the template. However, the {| code needs to be at the start of the line, or it will not display properly. You could fix this by using html tags like <table>, <tr>, <td> etc., or you could do the right thing and port it over to infobox. :) The infobox template also uses html tags so it would solve the problem, and it should make the code easier to read and the template faster to load. Geocoordinates: No seconds?

[edit]

Why doesn't this template allow placement of seconds in the coordinates? We have degrees and minutes, but no seconds. I realize that this is small details, but it could be important. I'm not going to even pretend that I know how to add seconds to the template, so would someone familiar with this kind of stuff be able to add it, and then update the documentation? Thanks. SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:18, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IIRC, the decision to omit the seconds was based on WP:OPCOORD: "Generally, the larger the object being mapped, the less precise the coordinates should be". Previous consensus was that such small detail was not needed for the mapping of counties. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:32, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you need more precise coordinates, I have gathered a complete list of the county coordinates here. The data is decimal degrees, down to 6 decimal places. That would translate to a fraction of a second. These are according to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent reports. However, I do not know what criteria the Census Bureau uses to designate such a precise point, as the numbers have changed since the 2000 census, even though the geography of most counties is stable. For a handful of counties I checked, the data does not coincide with the geographic center, the county seat, or any other reasonable point. Therefore it is wiser to use a coarser unit.    → Michael J    06:50, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If that point is something like the population center, it could lie anywhere in the county, including very near its border. Rounding to a coarser increment might result in a point that is actually outside the county, which would be undesirable. I don't think there's any substitute for manually looking at the minimum lat/lon span of the county, choosing a precision of approximately 1/10th that number, and then picking an approximate center point.
As far as the minutes-only, 1' is about 1600 m or 1 mi, which is appropriate precision for a county whose minimum lat or lon span is 10' (16 km; 10 mi) or larger. There are certainly some smaller counties than that. San Francisco County, California comes to mind, at 0.1 deg lat span, requiring 0.01 deg (36") or better precision. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:26, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It would probably be better just to modify this template to add the second (optional) time zone if I could get permission to edit it and the docs (or if someone else wanted to do it).

Also, I noticed that the generated time zone links look like: UTC-5/-4. Shouldn't they instead link to the actual time zones: UTC-5/-4? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 08:03, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is now code at Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox2 that works with testcases at Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2. Since the params were named differently, in order to be backward-compatible, the result actually supports three time zones.
There is one small cosmetic problem that I can't seem to solve, and that is (unfortunately) in the most common use case (see Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2#1 zone as TZ via 2TZ sandbox). There are a couple of extra lines present at the end of the Infobox that are coming either from the logic in the template or the TZ row transcluded template. If someone more familiar with that type of issue could have a look, I'd appreciate it. I wouldn't call it a show-stopper, though.
The code in Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox2 should replace the code in Template:Infobox U.S. county completely. Note that it now makes use of the new Template:Infobox U.S. county/TZ row. Example
Time zonesEastern

I don't know if you're seeing the same thing I am, but there are some issues with how it renders currently for me on Firefox 20:

  1. At Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 1 zone as TZ via 2TZ sandbox (#2) is the most common single-zone use case using my new template (). Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 1 zone as TZ via production (right below it) is the same case, using (your) production template (). The label, zone name, and offsets are spread over four lines (there is an extra blank line between zone name and offsets) in your version. I'll note that my version has a problem with extra lines (as mentioned above). It also has the problem that it neglects to put "UTC" in front of the offsets when both the zone name and the individual offsets are mentioned, which I can go into more detail about later (it's not a simple issue, and depends on exactly how it's being used out there currently). It's been broken for a while, so it can be addressed after the merge.
  2. At Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 2 zones via 2TZ sandbox is the 2-zone test case using my template. Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 2 zone as TZ1/2 via production is the same case using your template. There is an extra blank line between the "Time zones" label and the first zone name (Mountain...), as well as after each subsequent line (compare the spacing to the Area and Population sections above it). A minor issue is that there is just one label (less flexible) and no horizontal dividers between the zones, making it less clear to which zone the notes pertain.
  3. Just to mention it, my version supported 3 time zones. While nobody has actually gone through and implemented the multi-zone feature for most counties where it applies (only 2 so far), I have a feeling that there are some border cases in the southwest that are going to need all three.
I believe I fixed the bug here. Are there still bugs? I can certainly add additional timezones, but which county has three timezones? The label format I used was taken from Template:Infobox settlement, which has become the de facto standard over the years. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:52, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I will work on the automatic UTC linking in a bit. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:58, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking closer, thanks. I'm still seeing that "spread-out" (vertically) look in the 2-zone example, though. I've moved the two test cases to this template's sandbox at Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases § Test case 6 and Test case 7. #7 shows the "spread-out" effect, which you can see is also happening to the Area section as well, though not as much. The distance between the horizontal lines for the Area section, encompassing four lines, is 77px. In the one produced by the new template, it is 87px. In the new template Time Zone section, 4 lines are taking 112px. (BTW, I noticed that sections with no data in them now disappear, which is nice). More to follow re: the TZ name lookup and offsets... —[AlanM1(talk)]— 09:27, 21 July 2013 (UTC) [time passes...] Note that test case 5 shows a difference in the "largest city" area as well as an extra line in the population area "-(2013)".[reply]

With regard to the three zones, as I said, it's just a feeling based on previous research, but I can't quite put my finger on it. It will be related to observance and non-observance of DST in one zone and also another zone. Heck, it might even need 4. We can certainly wait until I come across the use case. It was just a side effect of the "time zone / time zone 1" naming difference that caused me to support both of them (instead of having to use a bunch of ifs).

With regard to the time zone specifiers, there are a number of issues, though I think it now does what the old one did, which is fine I guess, but it would be nice to fix the easy ones if possible while we're at it. That is, as follows:

# time zone UTC offset DST offset Result
1
  • Eastern
  • Central
  • Mountain
  • Pacific
  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
(e.g. Eastern)
ignored ignored {time zone}: UTC-Normal/-NormalDST
(e.g. Eastern: UTC-5/-4)
2 other value
(e.g. Somename)

(e.g. -5)

(e.g. -4)
{time zone}: {UTC offset}/{DST offset}

(e.g. -5)

(e.g. Somename: -5/)
4 other value
(e.g. Somename)
no value no value {time zone}: /
(e.g. Somename: /)
5 no value ignored ignored no value

One issue is the failure to insert "UTC" in front of the {UTC offset} in cases 2–4 (i.e. when |time zone=a non-standard value). We need to see if such use cases have "UTC" prepended to their |UTC offset= values.

Another minor cosmetic issue is, in cases 3, 4, and possibly 1, where |DST offset= is not present, the "/" appears in the output anyway, which is ugly. This should be removed.

Another minor cosmetic issue is the use of hyphens instead of the proper "arithmetic minus" (U+2212). We should probably convert hyphens in the user-specified offsets to minuses, as well as use them in the looked-up values for the standard time zones.

Another issue is how the offsets are linked. I think they should link to the relevant article for that offset (e.g. Eastern: UTC−5/−4).

A more difficult issue is what happens in case 1, where all three params are specified. Currently, it ignores the user-specified offset(s) and just provides the normal offsets for the specified time zone. I don't know how many of the existing cases do this, and whether any of them contain offsets that are not the same as the default, and which is correct in those cases. It seems that I need to download all articles that use this template and parse them to find out.

Thanks for your help. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 11:19, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I at least partially addressed the line spacing issue. The problem with the old code was that it was using <br> tags to split the labels in the area and population sections, and then using <br> tags to split the data. This is very bad for accessibility, since a screen reader will parse the labels first, then the data, and the two will not be aligned. A side-effect of splitting these into separate table cells is that we are going to get some more vertical separation. I added a line-height parameter to reduce this separation, but it may need some adjusting. I moved the 2TZ sandbox to sandbox2 and the 2TZ testcases to testcases2 when I deleted the 2TZ template. I updated the discussion links here as well to make things less confusing. Hopefully this doesn't cause any problems. The timezone code could uses some improvements. By far the most compact way to specify timezones would be to simply give the UTC offsets, and let the template generate the text. I'm not entirely sure why we need to support complete free form input here. I would imagine we should know all the possible timezones for all the counties in the United States, and just need a switch statement to catch them all? However, for now, I will work on the issues you have raised above concerning the spurious slash and the missing UTC prefix. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:33, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
reading Daylight saving time in the United States, it looks like we need some special timezone code for Arizona. this is handled in the timezone subtemplate by a check of |state=, but it seems that value is not passed to the template! given the special exceptions for native lands, we may want the ability to override this for some counties in Arizona? but, if we simply want to make sure we still have the functionality from before (see test case 8), we need to append |state={state} to list of parameters sent to . the Hawaii case is already handled since the only U.S. counties in that timezone do not observe DST. Frietjes (talk) 17:25, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are probably 10–20 counties that have special time zone cases related to DST observance and position near time zone borders. This was the use case for the 2TZ template, but nobody, (including me), got around to implementing it for those places. I think we need to see what the other hundreds of counties are doing (i.e. which params they are using and how) in order to decide what to do. If we were starting from scratch, most of them should be able to specify just a zone (Pacific, Mountain, etc.) and let the template produce the normal values. Then, there needs to be code for the exceptional cases that don't observe DST, span multiple zones, or have unusual zones (native reservations in Alaska near BC come to mind, as well as maybe island territories). I really need to get to downloading and parsing the existing articles that use the template. I'll try to do that this week. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:17, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Second seal parameter

May somebody please add a second seal parameter to the infobox? Some counties have two seals, see here. Thanks! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 00:20, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spaced hyphens should be spaced en dashes

[edit]

The template generates spaced hyphens (" - "), which have no sensible typographic role, according to MOS:DASH. Probably spaced en dashes would make more sense. That is, replace all  -  with  – (see diff for code of how it's done in html and wiki template). Dicklyon (talk) 23:02, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question: When I click the sandbox diff link in the box above, I see that not only does the sandbox date from 20 July 2013, but that it is very different from the live version - it's not just a matter of hyphens and dashes. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the sandbox to the live version, then changed the hyphens to bullets to match infobox settlement. Frietjes (talk) 16:26, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Seems to work. - 2/0 (cont.) 13:53, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed replacement

looks like there is some extra whitespace in the multi-timezone case. could be fixed by adding a rowspan to the label in infobox settlement, or by merging those cells in infobox settlement, both of which make sense since the "time zone" label applies to both data cells. Frietjes (talk) 17:48, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If we are going to do this, I'd rather suggest on putting this as a merge proposal on WP:TFD altogether. Zzyzx11 (talk) 09:06, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska boroughs have mayors, which it appears aren't supported by this infobox. It's been a while since I've lived anywhere else, but I recall that many counties have an equivalent in the county executive or similar.RadioKAOS (talk) 22:09, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Nickname parameter

[edit]

May an admin please add a "nickname" parameter to the infobox? A lot of U.S. counties have their own nicknames it'll be in line with settlement infoboxes which feature a nickname parameter. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 05:30, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting new parameter: Name/official name

[edit]

Considering that settlement infoboxes have separate parameters for both the official name and common name, I propose that U.S. county infoboxes do the same. Some counties have different official names and common names. For example:

name=Los Angeles County, California
official_name=County of Los Angeles

name=Fairfax County, Virginia
official_name=County of Fairfax

What do you guys think about this? Thanks! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 10:16, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Toggle-able 1px border for flags

[edit]

Please add a 1px border for the flag that can be toggled on or off. Thanks. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 23:12, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I learn something everyday: Flags of counties of the United States. Didn't even know there was such a thing. I also found that the template already puts a border around the county flags. The Wikipedia:Extended image syntax lets you put a border around images, but I don't see where there is a way to specify the thickness of the border. The only option I see would be to be able to remove the border. – Wbm1058 (talk) 00:39, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Is there no way to toggle borders? Is it all or nothing? Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 02:09, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I could give you a parameter that turned off the border, say flag border = no – the flag has a border by default. Is there a specific county or counties that you want to use this on? You can see what a border-less flag would look like by changing {{Infobox U.S. County| to {{Infobox U.S. County/sandbox| and clicking Show previewWbm1058 (talk) 02:32, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That "flag border no" seems good. I'd like to use this with "Kings County, California" as that county's flag is not quadrilateral-shaped. The border should be there by default, as most flags are rectangular or square, but should be able to be toggled off in the case they aren't, as linked earlier. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 11:21, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I see how it makes sense to remove the border from that flag. But that page uses Infobox settlement so similar changes will need to be made to that template too. I'll try to get to that later today. Wbm1058 (talk) 12:38, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 13:17, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This one was trickier to implement than I thought it would be. I just finished making the change to this template, then I went looking for links to File:Flag of Kings County, California.png (see Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Flag of Kings County, California.png) to look for pages that might benefit from this change. I found that History of the flags of the United States#County flags uses

where the NoBorder parameter was added to Flag entry by this edit. It doesn't matter what value the NoBorder parameter is set to, just using the parameter at all turns off the border (I think). I don't know which technique is preferred, if either, or whether introducing an inconsistency in the way templates turn off image borders is a good idea. So I'll leave this open for at least another day, so that any other admins or template editors who might have an opinion can comment. Then I'll update Infobox settlement with the preferred solution so that Kings County, California is fixed for you. Wbm1058 (talk) 15:37, 14 December 2013 (UTC) Actually that NoBorder change was made with two edits, so here's the 2-edit diff. Wbm1058 (talk) 15:58, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I simplified it a bit, and added a corresponding |flag_border= to infobox settlement, and updated Kings County, California. Frietjes (talk) 16:30, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Districts

[edit]

Can someone extend the template to include more than 3 congressional districts? This was discussed above, but it is not clear why it was not implemented. It is already included in the documentation, so I had already added several districts to Maricopa County here (Maricopa County includes all but one of Arizona's districts). If the template is going to allow multiple districts, there's no reason to stop at just 3. Kennethaw88 (talk) 03:02, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

added up to 8. Frietjes (talk) 15:37, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can the districts be extended to 9 for Harris County, Texas? This should be the max for the current redistricting period, since the other populous counties use Infobox settlement. Kennethaw88talk 17:09, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

website field

[edit]

Please add an alternate website parameter to work like Template:Infobox settlement, so we can substitute shorter text for very.very.very.very.very.very.long URLs, using single square brackets. If "web" param exists, then use {{#if:{}| {{url|1= {web} }} }}" , otherwise if "website" param exists, then use {{#if:{}|{website}}} that I copied from "Infobox settlement". Can somebody add wikilinks for the flag, logo, and seal like the settlement box? That way it can link to corresponding articles? Thanks. – Illegitimate Barrister, 13:51, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So after the mess of editing this morning, the population field no longer shows up in the right place, and does not link to the Census pages. What's the purpose of the demonym field? Wouldn't everyone just be called and XYZ Countian? I'm not familiar with anyone using demonyms for counties in the same way as cities, states, or countries. Also, why does it need a type parameter? For Alaska and Louisiana, the full title including Parish/Borough is already displayed at the top. I don't see why this template needs to replicate the settlement box, since this is only being used on US county/parish/borough articles. There's no need to make it super-generic for other types of settlements. (Also, why are there so many reverts and copyedits; isn't that what the sandbox is for?) kennethaw88talk 03:52, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, fuck. I forgot the population field, goddamnit. Oh, shit. How would we fix that? Some counties do have unique demonyms, such as this one. – Illegitimate Barrister, 12:39, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Support. The U.S. county infobox is missing so many parameters that the settlement one has, that a lot of U.S. county articles just use the settlement box. I don't blame them. – Illegitimate Barrister, 12:14, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I have added a parameter for a leader. It's pretty basic and rudimentary for the time being, though, due to my limited template editing skills. If we are using subtemplates of infobox settlement, is there some reason why we don't just make this a wrapper for infobox settlement? Frietjes (talk) 14:37, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Congressional districts - Arkansas' vs Arkansas's

[edit]

The proper usage is Arkansas's (due to the silent s), i.e., Arkansas's 1st congressional district. Currently, this template links to Arkansas' 1st congressional district, which is incorrect. You may want to change this:

The template handles proper placement of the apostrophe in the article name for states ending in the letter "s" (Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Texas).

Best, Brandonrush Woo pig sooie! 21:48, 1 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually not that important. The template only displays the district without any possessive. In fact, the articles for all states use the final s (Texas's 1st congressional district), so it doesn't really have anything to do with pronunciation. All the redirects exist to all the articles (I checked them myself a while ago). Any change to the template wouldn't actually change any functionality at this point. kennethaw88talk 04:57, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
true, but using the same logic for all states would actually reduce the complexity of the template. I will see if we can reduce the number of unnecessary redirects generated by this template. Frietjes (talk) 14:35, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
now fixed. all links now use the same pattern. Frietjes (talk) 14:58, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Should population be from decennial census, census estimate or both

[edit]

CensusBot is changing articles for U.S. counties, replacing the decennial census data with the 2016 census estimate. The template forces a choice between the two values, by forcing a choice between the parameter "census yr" for the decennial census and "census estimate yr" for census estimate. Template:Infobox settlement allows population data to be entered for both. Given the inherent inaccuracy of the estimates, why should we be forced to choose between displaying either decennial census data or the latest census estimate, when we can make both available? Alansohn (talk) 14:30, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As I've said in the past, "Template:Infobox U.S. county" needs to be modified to make population fields similar to "Template:Infobox settlement", in that both decennial and estimate should be 2 different fields so both can be displayed at the same time (same as "settlement" infobox used in city articles). New fields could be added to this template, then add logic to determine if old or new fields are being used. If new fields are being used ,then only use new fields, otherwise use old fields. This would allow an incremental conversion instead of immediately breaking a mountain of county articles. • SbmeirowTalk17:26, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PROPOSED NEW FIELDS
"population_footnotes" - same as "settlement" for decennial use.
"population_as_of" - same as "settlement" for decennial use.
"population_total" - same as "settlement" for decennial use.
"pop_est_footnotes" - same as "settlement".
"pop_est_as_of" - same as "settlement".
"pop_est_total"- different than "settlement", fixed name to be similar format as "population_total" name.

I agree with Sbmeirow that the "Infobox settlement" template is better suited to handle this distinction today. For that template, CensusBot only adds the population_estimate numbers and leaves the decennial information alone if it's already present (the bot could also update the decennial numbers in the future, but that task only happens once every 10 years). In the absence of the new fields proposed, I would suggest displaying the population estimate. While they're not a full census count, the U.S. Census estimates incorporate births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration. These are the same numbers that are used officially for Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes[1]. -- Logan-Census (talk) 16:58, 17 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What does "largest city" mean?

[edit]

What is the "largest city" supposed to include? As seen in this edit to the article for Cape May County, New Jersey, I have used the field to include both the largest by population and the largest by area, which may not be the same. I've included the largest by size / population for all municipalities in the county, while the other editor believes that it can only be a municipality incorporated as a city.

This template needs more work, and this is just one of the areas that needs to be addressed. Alansohn (talk) 15:41, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to tell you, whether it is specified or not, from what I've seen in all Kansas county articles, the LARGEST CITY means a city with the highest population at the last official decade census. I would say that all unincorporated communities are excluded. Though some township governments merge with city governments, I would say that if they are NOT the same, then the city name would be used instead of township name. If some type of complex merge, then would need to investigate: New Jersey state law definitions, U.S. Census boundaries of each, and U.S. Census population count of each would need to be investigated. U.S Census is the official source for all populations counts in Wikipedia. Incorporated communities are defined on page 9-6 of this document, in New Jersey the "largest city" field should only be a City, Town, Village, Borough places. A township is not one of these types of things, sorry. • SbmeirowTalk21:58, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When I see a form ask for city, state and ZIP Code, I put in my place of residence, which happens to be a township; I am not obligated to enter the name of a city. There is no evidence that the term "city" specified here is limited to only those places incorporated as cities. I'm not sure what "complex merge" is causing you such great anxiety, but every one of the 565 municipalities in New Jersey is incorporated as a municipality / minor civil division -- be it a city, town, borough, village or even a township -- and has its population and area tracked rather well by the United States Census Bureau. I'm not sure what your issue is here, given the definitions and sources you, yourself, cite. Alansohn (talk) 23:49, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Request for comment from other editors!SbmeirowTalk22:16, 24 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It should be an incorporated community with the largest population. The most populated place is more notable. The town with the largest land area in many counties may only have 10 people in it. I think the Census Bureau document probably made an error. There are only a handful of towns in New Jersey and most are smaller than townships. Perhaps the Census Bureau assumed that towns and townships were the same thing.--Rusf10 (talk) 23:18, 21 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Use of template in some pages

[edit]

Should this template be used in the following articles? I am asking because the use of the template in these articles puts them in the tracking category Articles with missing files, because there is no map to show in the infobox. Thank you. -- Radiphus 12:21, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

probably not, I will fix them per St. Lucie County, Florida (1844-1855), Mosquito County, Florida, ... until someone creates the maps per Buchel County, Texas, Worth County, Texas, ... Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Broken images?

[edit]
Resolved

SMcCandlish, it looks like you have broken map links in articles like Jackson County, Michigan and Frederick County, Virginia. Can you please revert and experiment in the sandbox? This template is used in 3,037 articles, and I expect that most or all of them are broken. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:22, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. I checked a random sample of counties in different states, and every one was broken. I have reverted your good faith edits. Please experiment in the sandbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:23, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed it for real, and yes, I should of course have used the 'box. Temporary lapse of judgment. I've been away for months, and am having to re-align my head a little. :-) Anyway, the feature added by the upgrade (now that it works) is |map_county=, which allows a variant county name to be specified for the map image when the WP name and the Commons name are not in agreement. Tested it at a couple of articles that needed it, and it's a-workin'.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  14:43, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My changes are visible on the testcases – I’ve changed the "in" to "within" on the map caption, which is a more appropriate word. Just need an admin to implement it. IWI (chat) 18:54, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the edit template-protected template. Most similar templates appear to use "in". See, for example, Template:Infobox_settlement. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:59, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Infobox settlement has no such automatic caption. This is a grammatical issue that need not consensus, Jonesey95, since the word within refers to a specific set of parameters (i.e. the United States or the state). Within, in this context is more specific, and thus more correct. IWI (chat) 15:16, 22 January 2019 (UTC) IWI (chat) 15:16, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Add multiple data entry points for "leader(s)" as is the case with Template:Infobox settlement for cities, towns, villages, and other municipalities, such as "leader_title1"/"leader_name1" and "leader_title2"/"leader_name2", etcetera, as in many cases counties have more than one governing official, not just a single executive. Suggestion to re-write template to be based on Infobox Settlement

[edit]

I got to looking and it may be possible to re-write this template to be based upon Template:Infobox Settlement, and allow this template to still maintain its unique features. It would help cut down on the redundant code between the two templates, and allow features like the display of both the decennial census and annual estimates.

For an example of a template that is based on the Settlement infobox is Template:Infobox U.S. metropolitan area. I am going to work on a draft of a rewritten U.S. county infobox written in the same manner and test it, so everyone can see how it works. If I can replicate the functionality I will suggest that the changes be implemented into the live template. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Edits) 23:07, 27 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please go look at Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox and the Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases and leave any feedback there. Also, if there is anything you are able to modify to make this work better feel free to edit the template, or let me know what needs to be done and I can edit it. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Edits) 23:56, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@No1lakersfan: In the testcase page I can't see any information that is in the current infobox version but not in the sandbox. If that is true, then it could be switched. also has been switched to use Infobox settlement. The counties are the last type of political/administrative entity in the United States that doesn't use Infobox settlement. TerraCyprus (talk) 11:58, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Census overhaul proposal

[edit]

Since the 2020 census is getting closer, I would like to see the census section for the county template to get overhauled.

The downside of the current template is: 1) the "pop" field name is shared between the decade census and yearly estimate, 2) only one population count is shown, 3) there's no field for a reference.

For backwards compatibility, I propose that if old field names exist in an article then logic should use the old format, otherwise logic should use the new fields and new output format.

*** Proposed new output example ***
  Population
  • Total (2010)[1] 1,234,567
  • Estimate (2018)[2] 1,245,678
  • Density 27,751/sq mi (10,715/km2)

*** Proposed new fields and examples ***
  pop_footnotes =
  pop_as_of         = 2010
  pop_total         = 1234567
  pop_est_footnotes =
  pop_est_as_of     = 2018
  pop_est_total     = 1245678
  pop_density_sq_mi = auto

Notes:
If the prefix "pop" isn't favorable, then maybe use "population" instead. (discussion)
Ideas were borrowed from "Template:Infobox settlement".

SbmeirowTalk02:02, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sbmeirow, I think this is a good idea, as the templates for cities already have provisions like this. As long as this does not break what is done currently I believe it would be fine. Besides, once figures for Census 2020 are available the estimates should be removed anyway. Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Edits) 00:19, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Using prefex population_ would increase the Wikipedia:Consistency among the place-related infoboxes. TerraCyprus (talk) 14:13, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Parameter name adjustment

[edit]

In each parameter name for which the parameter has a 1:1 correspondence to a parameter in Infobox settlement has been changed to the parameter name of the latter template. Doing this for would reduce the amount of documentation - one can point to or copy from Infobox settlement and learning - article editors may know the standard names from Infobox settlement already. Template-protected edit request on 20 August 2019

[edit]

Request to replace with this sandbox version. No1lakersfan and me re-coded the template so that it is based on Infobox settlement. That template is also used in the background by and directly by thousands of articles about villages, townships, towns, cities, etc. in the United States. Overall Infobox settlement is used on 504 000+ place-related article pages, it is the English Wikipedia standard template for states, provinces, counties, districts, townhips, cities, villages, etc. TerraCyprus (talk) 12:04, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I second this request, as I was the one who initially began the migration to try and bring it up to par with the templates used on city and town pages. To my knowledge everything functions as it should in the sandbox. I can also assist with the revision of the documentation for the template as well since there are a few minor changes to be made there too. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Edits) 22:37, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It will then also be easier to implement the above #Census overhaul proposal, because for each variable that exists in Infobox settlement the code would only be one line in the form of
|parametername = {}

Change | subdivision_name1 = {{flag|{}}} to | subdivision_name1 = {{flag|{{#ifeq:{state} |Georgia |Georgia (U.S. state) |{} }} }}

Geogria, New York, and Washington all have country data templates with disambiguation. Because there are no other country data templates called New York or Washington, the flag template can handle the issue on its own. With Georgia, however, there is Template:Country data Georgia (U.S. state) and Template:Country data Georgia (country). When given the name "Georgia", the flag template assumes the country, not the state, resulting in the flag of Georgia (country) being shown on all pages about counties in Georgia (U.S. state). This change sets the state explicitly. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:36, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Unlink Country to just Country. Nobody reading a US county article is looking for a list of countries in the world.
  2. Similarly, unlink State to just State. Any one interested in a specific US county can be expected to have a reasonable understanding of what a US state is. They're never going to click on that link.
  3. Change call to template ifempty to if empty to avoid an unnecessary redirect (that redirect has to be followed every time this template is used, which is over 3000 articles). Colonies Chris (talk) 20:02, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

city type should be changed to municipality type

[edit]

In the template there is a "city type" variable used to differentiate the largest city of the county, which then shows under city. However, I think this should be renamed as "municipality type" to make it easier and simpler to understand. When we look at a county, we don't want to see the largest city or largest borough, we want to see the largest municipality. When it's selected, the variable should then show up as "Largest municipality" instead of "Largest city" in case of the county's largest municipality not being a city as is often the case in many states, especially PA and NJ. Inheriting automatic density calculation from "settlement"

[edit]

What's the problem with this template supporting the "settlement" density value of "auto"? I am new to the wikipedia ecosystem, but it seems like a wrapper should support all the features of the parent. That said, as a software engineer, I realize there are many reasons why this wouldn't automatically function; yet, this would still be a "nice" feature, especially if trivial to enable. New-Style Population fields added to documentation

[edit]

This new style of population fields were added quite a while ago, but no one ever got around to documenting them. These new field names are based on similar fields in Template:Infobox settlement.

The following fields are now shown in the documentation:

population_footnotes
population_as_of
population_total
pop_est_footnotes
pop_est_as_of
population_est
population_density_sq_mi
population_density_km2

I recommend all county articles be converted to this new style, because both the decennial (10-year) official census and the estimate census are displayed at the same time, along with each of their references too. If you are editing county infoboxes, please convert to these fields. Thanks!

Including Economic Information on the County

[edit]

I think we should add some economic information to U.S. counties. Opportunity atlas has data on median household income in 2012-2016, median rent, as well as fraction of college graduates. They also have these variables they calculated themselves measuring opportunity, such as the median income for a child born to a low income family at the age of 35.

I propose we incorporate at least the median household income and median rent into the template, and I think including the "median income for a child born to a low income family at the age of 35" would be helpful as well. Sure, it might be a bit confusing at first, but I think it is very noteworthy information. There should probably also be a FIPS code section of the template.

I feel like since the data is already there, it should be possible to write a bot to add all of the information onto the county pages? I have never done something like that before, but I would be willing to give that a shot. AI coolTIM (talk) 01:55, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Default type being "U.S. county"

[edit]

The default type of this infobox should be "County" and not "U.S. county". The reason is that this infobox automatically adds the short description <type> in <state>, United States. However, editors clearly dislike the auto-generated description and override it with County in <state>, United States (examples: 1, 2, 3). Can we change the default so this no longer has to be manually overridden everywhere? Thrakkx (talk) 16:23, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This seems reasonable. I have removed "U.S." from the default value of |settlement_type= for the above reason and because it seems redundant. There are many other indications in this infobox that the place is in the United States, including "Location within the U.S. state of ...", "[state]'s location within the U.S.", and a prominent U.S. flag. Removing "U.S." from the type also matches the default type value in infoboxes like Infobox Italian comune and others. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:32, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Add census codes to info box

[edit]

You list codes like Zips, Area Codes, and Congressional Districts (which may be represented by census codes). However, you do not list the Congressional Disctrict FIPS codes, nor do you list the County FIPS codes or GEOID codes. Since we live in a data world where much data across government agencies are released at a county level using census codes it only stands to reason to add them to this info box. Yes, there are county lists of FIPS codes. However, by keeping that separate, the user has to look in 2 places - the County articles for more information about the county and then find the page that lists the codes. It just stands to reason that all codes related to the county should be listed in the info box. Drmissio (talk) 13:26, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leader(s)

Maybe I'm just misreading the template instructions, but it implies that you can put multiple leaders in the infobox without actually saying how to do it. For instance, if a county has a County Mayor and a Vice Mayor (or equivalent), it seems like you can only put one, in the template. Am I missing something? nf utvol (talk) 15:35, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should we include the county executive as well as the district attorney of a county? 2600:100C:A103:309B:8DBE:362A:250C:185D (talk) 01:46, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a directory, per WP:NOTDIRECTORY. In general I feel the absolute maximum number of people should be included in community infoboxes should be 1 or 2 top people max. For example, for cities (yeah I know this isn't a county), I feel that maybe the Mayor and City Manager is the most that should ever be included, because of WP:NOTDIRECTORY, so the same for counties too, only the top 1 or 2 people of power. • SbmeirowTalk23:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree here but what would encompass this? Both of these are pretty powerful in general. 2600:100C:A103:309B:78B5:8E87:10D3:39D (talk) 01:41, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Parameters for Government section

[edit]

The government subsection of the infobox only has the one leader parameter, so perhaps a second parameter for legislative bodies (such as county councils, as a fair few have their own articles) and types of government would work well to keep it from looking too small and out of place. The Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone is split between Hawaii and Alaska. Alaska observes daylight saving time, but Hawaii does not. Thus, please change:

Hawaii = HADT

to

Hawaii = {{#ifeq:{state}|Hawaii||HADT}}

and please add

| Hawaii = {{#ifeq:{state}|Hawaii||−9}}

below

| Alaska = −8

in the two places where each occurs. Kk.urban (talk) 20:13, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
