Alumni
[edit]Hey, I have a query but before I do anything, I just want to get the opinions of other people here. RAU and UJ are distinctly different institutions for various reasons, so does an alumni from RAU (or Vista or Wits Technikon too for that matter) from any year preceding 2004 count as an alumni of the University of Johannesburg? The reason I ask is because I contribute quite heavily to the notable people section of the article, and over here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:University_of_Johannesburg_alumni I have found people like Mark Pretorius and Aletta Norval who claim to be UJ alumni, despite earning their qualifications before 2005. In Aletta's case, s/he earned them in the '80s. So basically what this boils down to is this: Should alumni from Vista University, RAU and the Wits Technikon be included as part of UJ's alumni or should they stay as notable alumni of their respective institute of graduation? - I would tend to agree with including alumni from previous institutions as they now fall under the University of Johannesburg. I wanted to expand this section myself at one stage though I struggled to find alumni from the older institutions. A point that I would like to raise with you is that if the list of alumni gets too big, it might be worth adding a special page just for notable people as is with many other universities - a large list of people will only begin to clutter the article after a while which will serve little purpose. Here is a link to an example of what I am talking about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_University_of_the_Witwatersrand_people. I also see that you have added Professor Farid Esack as a notable staff member, I am sure that he is an important person though I think that the notable people lists should only consist of people who have contributed or are contributing something exceptional to the universities international image. If you look at this section you will notice that I have added people based only on their exceptional research work or special achievements and have added a small excerpt of their achievements and/or contributions. If you could please add what Professor Farid Esack has done that is exceptional or a special achievement please do so else, as I mentioned earlier, a new page could be created to list all alumni staff members etc... Please let me know of your thoughts and thanks for all your efforts thus far. Mattsan22 (talk) 12:53, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- I think that a new list would be great to note every notable person (in this context, any person that has a Wikipedia article about them) who has gone to UJ but only after a certain number of people. At which point does mentioning a number of people as alumni make it more logical for UJ to have its own list of alumni rather than have them mentioned on the page? - I have since added the new article for List of University of Johannesburg people (as the current notable people section will undoubtedly get larger as more information is found) where you and others can add as many notable people to the list as necessary. I think that only the most important and more well known people should be present on the main University of Johannesburg's article - maybe like a top 10 or less per section (use your own discretion). I am trying to model this article on other well-known universities pages for style and structure such as Harvard University or Yale University. People listed on the main article page should be duplicated on the new article for List of University of Johannesburg people.Mattsan22 (talk) 20:06, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
Reduction in bulleted and numbered lists & Call for more photo's
[edit]I have attempted to reduce the number of unnecessary bulleted and numbered lists in this article. If you have the know-how, please could you assist me in creating external pages for lists such as these in order to improve the quality of the article.
I have observed that this article does not contain enough pictures to make it interesting and to provide more insight into UJ and its activities. Please consider uploading high-quality free from copyright pictures for each section of the article.Mattsan22 (talk) 09:49, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
Research centres
[edit]I have deleted "Aquatic ecotoxicology" as a research centre because according to the University of Johannesburg Research Centres' page (https://www.uj.ac.za/research/Pages/Research-Centres.aspx), aquatic ecotoxicology is studied under the research centre; Centre of Aquatic Research and therefore I think it would be more appropriate to only note down "Centre of Aquatic Research" rather than stating them as separate research centres. It also eliminates the [citation needed] for aquatic ecotoxicology. I also assume the same can be done for Advanced Composite Materials[citation needed] Harold Rollskie (talk) 12:04, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
comprehensive contact university
[edit]This phrase "comprehensive contact university" has no clear meaning. Please either put it in terms that will be plain or just drop the claim. Fabrickator (talk) 04:02, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
