Concert Updates

[edit]

Hi!,

I have added concert updates to this article!:)

Yes. Whether that's appropriate to add to an encyclopedic article is, uh, highly debatable. -- Antaeus Feldspar 21:46, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

campaign for american television appearances

[edit]

Hi!,

I'd like to give a big Thanx from the Bronx to all you nice people who are fellow SOS fans like me! Many SOS fans will be viewing this page and it is important to keep as much info available to all fans. I am the one who started the email and letter campaign to get my favorite group on shows such as Tonight Show and Dave Letterman ect ect...

If you read my autobio, you know that I have gotten Kylie Minogue on USA TV and her sister Dannii also! It was thrilling to get a Thank You message from Dannii! You may read about me by clicking on my Internet screen name below.

Supercool Dude 01:59, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

There's a lot of extremely non-NPOV material been added recently. (The POV being specifically, gushily enthusiastic SOS fan.) At a minimum, these ought to be critically attributable; better they be removed entirely, IMO. Alai 02:10, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

SOS in USA

[edit]

SOS will be in America in June 2005 at LA, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore, Philadelphia & New York.

Offical Web Site

[edit]

There are two offical web sites listed. Which is the real one? Please respond here (not on my talk page) or edit the article. Mperry 06:40, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno

[edit]

The Vital Thing and SOS.net and both Le Grande Large's are all owned by Andy Connell and run by SOS assistant Antonio Andolini, as far as I know.....

Japan-only?

[edit]

Under the album description for "The Living Return" it mentions the album "Live at the Jazz Cafe" as a Japan-only album.

However under "Filth and Dreams" and the album listing at the bottom of the page, they state that Filth and Dreams is the only Japan-only album. Sounds like there should be a correction somewhere. Kwyjibear 05:22, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Videos

[edit]

The links for the videos Twilight World and Am I The Girl are no longer valid. YouTube has removed the videos. If the videos can't be posted anywhere else, the links should be taken down. Kwyjibear 17:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Albums

[edit]

The album Another Non-Stop Sister is listed as being released in 1987. On the official site, the date is 1989. Also the official site lists a few more albums and I don't think all the extra albums are Best Of. Kwyjibear 06:02, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beginnings

[edit]

No mention of how Drewery became involved ... 135.196.110.34 (talk) 20:40, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube Videos of SOS

[edit]

I just visited youtube.com and searched Swing Out Sister and found many SOS videos still active.

Either their server went down or new videos were posted in their place.

It is not legal for us here at Wikipedia, as Jimbo Wales lawyers have already pointed out, for us to host copyrighted images or videos.

It is sad to see that these videos could not stand the test of time here.

I dont know, maybe you could ask permission.

I started this article here at Wikipedia in December 2004 and am happy, with how it has been so much improved.

I'd like to voice my personal appreciation to those, who have done so much to help.

Thanx from the Bronx!

Which Akiko did they work with?

[edit]

Akiko Yano?Andycjp 06:35, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Akiko

[edit]

Yes, it was Akiko Yano and Corinne sang on The Waters Of March.

Supercool Dude (talk) 05:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, SCD - that is NOT Akiko Yano. A click on the link above ought to demonstrate that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.236.178 (talk) 17:51, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Swing out sister <> everything but the girl (?)

[edit]

I guess I should play my CD's more often. For a minute there I thought Swing Out Sister was the same as Everything but the Girl.

Sad that I rarely see CD's of either group for sale in US/Canada.

I've actually got It's Better To Travel and Kaleidoscope World (and Acoustic and The Language Of Life by EBTG).

I guess there's a lot of Smooth (or new/fusion) jazz CD's that we just don't get to see here in US/Canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.49.240.201 (talk) 01:25, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

POV & Unreferenced

[edit]

This article is almost completely without any references, except for dubious YouTube link(s). Equally it is full of opininated, unsourced claptrap. Here is one such paragraph: "For this record, SOS adapted to the growing popularity of hip-hop in the late '90s. "Who's Been Sleeping" kicks off the record with an aggressive beat and a few hip-hop flourishes (such as Drewery's counting and uttering "Yeah..." in the background.) The rest of the record incorporates such sounds a bit more subtly, through the soaring retro stylings of "Closer Than the Sun" and "When Morning Comes" to the excitable lounge of the title track to the mid-tempo trip-hop of "Invisible" and scratch-laced "Sugar Free." Traditional SOS sounds are challenged successfully with the darkly dreamy "If I Had the Heart" and "Make You Stay." Background noises, from telephone conversations to child's play, also enrich the record and give the listener much more to cue in on. Drewery strays out of the usual love lyrics and colors a portrait of a darker world (as the title indicates) by singing about more urban subjects such as drugs (the eerie "Happy When You're High") and prostitution ("When Morning Comes")."

Fancruft bollocks at its best (or worst, whichever way you look at it). The whole piece needs some serious editing and referencing to bring it anywhere near encyclopedic staus. Can anyone make a start ? Many thanks,

Shapes and Patterns

[edit]

This statement is not correct, "Shapes and Patterns was first released in Japan in March 1997, and then in Europe and USA the year after." I bought a US pressing of the CD back in June of 1997. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.246.15.142 (talk) 23:57, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SOS

[edit]

SOS is now on tour in UK. They will be in USA next May-June.

See you at B B Kings!

Why is there a Neutrality thingy on this page?

Supercool Dude (talk) 01:30, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a full list of dates available anywhere ? The Concert section on the official website has no info. RGCorris (talk)

Acid jazz?

[edit]

How does Swing Out Sister end up in the category "Acid jazz?" - Michael J Swassing (talk) 04:38, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering the same thing!! 63.165.50.227 (talk) 19:47, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Filth and Dreams?

[edit]

The article claims the Filth and Dreams album "is probably the strongest SOS outing to date" How is this opinionated statement justified, particularily as this album is highly untypical of the groups music?

Whilst based on a restricted audience, the Filth and Dreams album appears to be the least well liked album see: this forum on the official site

These are the average rankings on one of the threads based on my calculations

Kaleidoscope World 3.9
Somewhere Deep In The Night	4.0
Shapes & Patterns 4.2
Beautiful Mess 4.8
It's Better To Travel 5.0
The Living Return 5.0
Get In Touch With Yourself	5.5
Where Our Love Grows 5.8
Filth & Dreams 6.7

Windmills of Your Mind

[edit]

The Wikipedia entry for this song says that it has been covered by SoS, but does not include them in the list of recorded versions. Have they recorded it, or have they just performed it live ? RGCorris (talk) 08:37, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quotation versus Sample

[edit]

In the main page: "which featured a sample from the John Barry score from the film Midnight Cowboy." - as far as I can hear, it's not a sample but is a similar descending phrase, ie. it's not an audio sample / clip from Midnight Cowboy, but is a performance including the harmonica solo which quotes the MC theme, which is then echoed by the strings and (?) vibraphone subsequently, in the playout. In the film theme, the last note continues the downward path, whereas in the SOS phrase it goes higher again. 195.59.147.60 (talk) 17:51, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

POV, Neutrality, etc.

[edit]

Over 3 years has passed since the POV was first questioned and this entire entry still sounds like the gushings of a big SOS fan. This is NOT a fansite. And even more shocking is someone questioned why the "Neutrality thingy" (their words) was on this page? REALLY??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.223.136.5 (talk) 19:22, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The last section does appear to be almost promotional, not too sure about the remainder. Are there any particular parts you object to, or could you provide an example of another band entry as an example of how it should be written?--Andromedean (talk) 07:18, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The entire article reads like a slimy promo piece. I just removed two obvious pov adjectives, but the entire article needs to be drastically reworked, and I just don't have the energy. TheScotch (talk)

Martin Jackson did not play for Frank Zappa

[edit]

This extraordinary false claim has been in the article for 17 years, since it was first created. The Martin Jackson that played on Frank Zappa's London Symphony Orchestra albums is a cellist with the London Symphony Orchestra, not the drummer from an '80s pop band! It may interest you to know this piece of nonsense has since been cited in multiple articles and even an actual book. tomasz. 03:16, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
