Racist accusations
[edit]There should be a paragraph on the accusations of racism that have been made against the book. As for now, the parts on Blixen's relations to the africans are not neutral.

The statement that Europeans regarded Africans as savages or simpletons in false and racist. I suggest it be deleted.124.197.15.138 (talk) 18:30, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
Added WikiNovel box and classified as "start." Good foundation for much expansion. In the right hands and given the subject matter, this has potential to be an FA. Lots of source material out there. M. Buenviaje 03:44, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Split from Out of Africa (film) on 22 Oct 2006.
reclassed as B as this has plenty of material to warrant it. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:49, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Another "Out of Africa"
[edit]Another meaning of the phrase "Out of Africa" concerns the migration of early humans from their evolutionary "home" in Africa to Europe, Asia, Australasia and N. and S. America. The phrase is used by anthropologists in that sense and it is a very important phase in the evolution of humans. Unfortunately, I do not have enough knowledge to write an article (I came across the the absense of it when searching the Internet for "Out of Africa"!) At the very least I suggest that a note be added to mention this other meaning. (I have just seen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_Africa_theory Perhaps a link to that would suffice.80.229.250.120 23:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Steve Kirkby.
Confused about the language
[edit]Could someone be so kind as to clarify what the original language in which it was published is? As things are now, "Danish, English" is not very clear information... Was it published first in Danish and then translated in English by the author, or is the book actually written in both languages? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amateria (talk • contribs) 19:49, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Wiki out of africa random house.jpg
[edit]Image:Wiki out of africa random house.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pen name?
[edit]I'm curious why this article's text credits the book to her under her pen name, while the first edition cover image clearly shows it was published under her real name. postdlf (talk) 17:29, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- Nicely spotted. I did some Googling and the first UK edition was indeed published under her real name, so I have removed the claim about the pen name in the article. --Saddhiyama (talk) 17:42, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. Incidentally, I looked up this article after reading a quote from Hemingway about the book in A Moveable Feast (pp. 192-93, Touchstone, 1996 edition), calling it "perhaps the best book about Africa that I ever read." He had been friends with her husband the Baron in Paris, of whom he said "Blickie was always very proud of his first wife's writing." Probably worth noting in the article, though I see there's not yet any kind of reception section. postdlf (talk) 18:07, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- It seems that all traces of the pen name have been removed from the article, yet Amazon, com, for example, lists Isak Dinesen as the author. I think people might like to know that some editions were published under a pen name. 130.184.202.187 (talk) 12:32, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
- I vociferously disagree with removing all references to her pen name. I, for one, was confused if there was 2 books or if one was in Danish and another with a different author in English. Amazon, a major US seller, lists it under the pen name. It should appear somewhere on the page. I'm going to add it back in. Other can certainly argue where it should appear. The book(s) and the movie need to be separated
[edit]Just as has been done with The English Patient, so does the need to be done with the article concerning the movie, particularly the plot. It has to stand alone based on what is done and said within the movie. With the plot, it seems at times other sources are used to explain what is going on as to the differences between the movie and the book(s).2605:E000:9152:8F00:C17E:C6DF:9D11:32F (talk) 23:34, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Africans or Kenyans.
[edit]I have reverted a good faith edit that changed all reference of Africans to Kenyans. I feel this is not correct, as at the time the region was British Kenya. The local population would have been a one of about a dozen different ethnic groups that would have intermingled to some degree. Perhaps it would be better to refer to local indigenous group where relevant. I haven't read the book so not sure how localised the story is.--Dmol (talk) 20:54, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
Move to Out of Africa (memoir)
[edit]Hi all! I reverted a move by Tomastvivlaren from Out of Africa to Out of Africa (memoir). I can see some merits in it, but I think it produced a strange result, because the disambiguated title, Out of Africa, became a redirect to Out of Africa (memoir), instead of a page by itself. There are at least 3 main uses of the expression (the book, the film, the migration) so it would make sense to turn Out of Africa into the disambiguation, but then we'd be changing a long standing link, for a not enough strong reason, in my opinion. If (memoir) is a common and/or useful disambiguator, I think it is perfectly fine to (re)create it as a redirect, and I will do it soon(ish) if there is no opposition -Nabla (talk) 21:08, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
- Nabla, this is the usual way to start such a transition. In my experience. But I leave this issue now.Tomastvivlaren (talk) 18:34, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Tomastvivlaren: What transition? And why is it needed? Note that I am not strictly against any naming scheme, except that it looks weird to have nothing at the plain titled "Out of Africa" article - Nabla (talk) 20:50, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
Contrasts and opposites
[edit]The sentence: "Her life in Africa offered her no shortage of such contrasting dualities: town and country, dry season and rainy season, Muslim and Christian. Her most constant theme is the contrast of African and European" appears to be a direct quote from a World Heritage Encyclopedia article at xttp://www.worldheritage.org/article/WHEBN0007575234/Out%20of%20Africa
I tried to add the citation but worldheritage.org is apparently blacklisted. I have requested that the site be removed from the blacklist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phersh (talk • contribs) 02:44, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- Vice-versa; the material was copied from here and attributed as such. Kuru (talk) 15:04, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, that makes sense. In that case, I think that this sentence and others read more like an originally researched book report. Many of the citations are to the novel. I don't plan any further action as I think the analysis is professional and well reasoned, and I personally would not know which resources to reference. Phersh (talk) 16:26, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
