Requested move 24 June 2014
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Move. The consensus is that this subject is the primary topic of Max Unger; this also restores the page to its status quo title. Cúchullain t/c 13:40, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Max Unger (American football) → Max Unger – rvt botched DAB page to Primary Topic with consent of mover. – UW Dawgs (talk) 16:43, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:38, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Support Reversion - Disclosure: I notified the moving editor within 24 hours that their move appeared to be in violation WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, they agreed and requested assistance, and then I filed a Uncontroversial technical requests to revert (which served to preserve edit history, rather than performing a flawed copy-paste "move.") The Administrator (alone) flagged this as "contested technical request" -which is erroneous in my narrow view.

- Need to revert Max Unger (American football) to Max Unger, per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, with Max Unger (disambiguation) remaining and hatnotes/link clean up to ensue. UW Dawgs (talk) 21:23, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Comment - Max Unger (sculptor) was created two days ago (by the moving editor), so PVs and inbound links are in flux and impacted by the creating Editor's edits.
- Max Unger (musicologist) has been edited 11 times in four years, and serves as another indicator of the relative significance of the subject. UW Dawgs (talk) 23:46, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose - page views always show trivia getting more views. User:WQUlrich made a reasonable move. Having made the move deliberately ambiguating articles is of minimal benefit to readers and often disruptive to the project. A very firm case needs to be made to believe a WP:RECENT minor player like Max Unger (American football) (b.1986) has more lasting encyclopedic significance than Max Unger (sculptor), let alone the sculptor plus Max Unger (musicologist) put together. - Comment - Could you please rephrase in a format related to existing policy, rather than an opinion-driven perspective? Thank you. UW Dawgs (talk) 23:30, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

- Support, per Jenks24.
Leaning towards Max Unger (disambiguation) → Max Unger, taking a worldwide view. This is a subjective call, balancing the two major criteria for primary topic. Max Unger (American football) is not a minor player. He is a 2× Pro Bowler who just played on the winning Super Bowl team. Yes, this is recent, but sufficient to make him primary topic in the United States. If he wins a couple more Super Bowls, he potentially could gain the stature of a Mike Webster (hopefully without the brain injuries, though), which would surely merit PT status. Clearly he will be PT with respect to usage (i.e., Internet links, but not necessarily in books), but by the other criteria: long-term significance, enduring notability and educational value, the sculptor and musicologist seem sufficient to say that none of these are the clear primary topic, especially outside of the US. Putting the shoe on the other foot, some Americans might think that no footballer outside of David Beckham or Pelé should ever be a PT—though that could be changing over time too. Comment There is relative ambivalence to the non-football Max Ungers. Pick the metric, the football player garners far more interest from both editors and viewers. The difference isn't 2x or 3x, it is 10x. UW Dawgs (talk) 00:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

- Support. Obviously meets the usage criterion of PRIMARYTOPIC. And seems to have achieved at least as much in his field as the other two Max Ungers, so I don't think the encyclopedic significance criterion goes against him. Note to the closing admin: if this ends no consensus, the status quo ante should be restored which would involve moving the American football player to the primary topic. Jenks24 (talk) 08:07, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
- Comment – The sculptor is PT in German Wikipedia. See de:Max Unger. They disambiguate the musicologist as Max Ernst Unger. There is no German article on the American football player (nor any other language, for that matter). I think there are limits to taking a worldwide view, and have been persuaded that the football player is PT for the English language. Wbm1058 (talk) 13:21, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
