Notability and sourcing issues

[edit]

@Dariusx749: See WP:N: "A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." (emphasis added).

This article is written almost entirely from sources written by the subject. In order to establish notability, the article needs significant coverage in independent reliable sources — coverage not written by Harrop-Williams, but about him. I will add the tag back in case it still doesn’t meet the requirements, but I had retrieved 4 secondary sources that were scholarly books. 1 from a news publication. And another from KoreaScience, which references his work as part of a broader geotechnical study. Does this justify removing the multiple issues tag? Looking through the sources you've added:
  • ASCE Annual Combined Index, 1985 – this is just an index, and nowhere near WP:SIGCOV
  • "The Effect of Cut-slope on Structural Behavior of Cut-and-Cover Tunnel", Korea Science – this is an academic article that cites his work, but provides no information on the subject himself
  • Peterson's Annual Guides to Graduate Study – I'm not able to find this source to verify what it is
  • Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers – same as previous
  • Potomoc Local – a press release announcing the date of his death, with no additional information.
These fall far short of what is required to establish notability. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 14:53, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps at all, here is the links for the Peterson Guides to Graduate Study and the Transactions of the American Society of Engineers: https://books.google.ca/books?id=j8XjAAAAMAAJ&q=%22Kingsley+O.+Harrop-Williams%22+-wikipedia&dq=%22Kingsley+O.+Harrop-Williams%22+-wikipedia&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&source=gb_mobile_search&ovdme=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiY2p_Vy82KAxUu4MkDHRGNHNkQ6AF6BAgOEAM#%22Kingsley%20O.%20Harrop-Williams%22%20-wikipedia and https://books.google.ca/books?id=j8XjAAAAMAAJ&q=%22Kingsley+O.+Harrop-Williams%22+-wikipedia&dq=%22Kingsley+O.+Harrop-Williams%22+-wikipedia&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&source=gb_mobile_search&ovdme=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiY2p_Vy82KAxUu4MkDHRGNHNkQ6AF6BAgOEAM#%22Kingsley%20O.%20Harrop-Williams%22%20-wikipedia Dariusx749 (talk) 18:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Peterson Guides to Graduate Study source
Transactions of the American Society of Engineers source Dariusx749 (talk) 18:27, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. These are, again, only mentions of his name or brief citations to his work, and do not provide significant coverage of Harrop-Williams himself. Is this all that is available as far as independent sources? GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 19:22, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here are some citations of his work I have recently retrieved. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Dariusx749 (talk) 21:43, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
the ISBN number for the 6th citation is 9780872623583. Does any of that help the article? Dariusx749 (talk) 21:45, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, again: citations to his work do not establish notability because they are not significant coverage about Harrop-Williams. You need things like biographical articles about him, published in independent reliable sources. You really do not need to continue adding citations to his work, which is more like citebombing than anything else, and is not terribly helpful. GorillaWarfare (she/her • talk) 21:51, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
first citation - uses his charts and draws from his work
second citation - cites his work 3 times and mentions it as a widely used force chain arch prediction theory
third citation - his work is referenced in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal
fourth/fifth citation - cites his work 3 times and references it to establish soil mechanical claims
sixth citation - his work as part of a larger collection for geotechnical publications Dariusx749 (talk) 22:37, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The citations are not the main topic of the source material, but they’re more than just a trivial mention. Does that adhere to significant coverage? Dariusx749 (talk) 22:41, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Citations are only particularly useful in establishing notability if you can demonstrate that Harrop-Williams is "highly cited". This is normally established through citation indexes rather than individual citations to an academic's work. From what I am able to glean from the resources I have access to, Harrop-Williams falls well short of this, but I do not have access to some of the major citation indexes.
