Rising Star

[edit]

Josh Johnson, along with other newly acquired pitchers looks to be a dominating pitcher in the future for the Marlins. His 2006 Marlins season was so successful that at one point he was a candidate for many awards. He looks to build upon his 2006 experience in 2007 but an early looks to put a damper on his 2007 season.

Trade?

[edit]

There are rumors that Johnson could be traded before the 2007 trade deadline. The marlins are in desperate need of a premier centerfielder and if rookie centerfielder alejandro de aza struggles a trade could likely happen. Johnson who is sidelined for two months with a nerve injury was lucky he did not receive any damage as he would have likely missed the entire 2007 season and likely been traded. Johnson is considered one of the next premier pitchers but many question his fatigue issues. Due to his size( 6-7 ft tall and over 250 lbs) Johnson suffers from great fatigue that greatly diminishes his play and puts him at risk of injury. Because the shear force of the balls he throws and size johnson's dominance in a game usually begins to diminish some where around the 4th or 5th inning and the effects of fatigue become present. last season then manager girardi came under fire for letting Johnson pitch after 4 shutout innings after a rain delay rather than put in an relief pitcher. Johnson was shortly pulled from the game for poor play and injury and the marlins ended up losing. Johnson afterwards was diagnosed with an elbow injury. Even when johnson does return there is still a great risk of reinjury and poor play and given the marlins crop of pitching prospects and need for a centerfielder johnson could find himself in a new uniform by the end of the year.
