I know this isn't appropriate, but I heard this joke and I just can't help myself.

An Irish building site applicant was asked to differentiate between a joist and a girder. "That's easy," he said, "Joist wrote Ulysses and Girder wrote Faust".

height/width ratio of joists

There is some mention of current height/width ratios for joists in this article. however these seem to reflect modern practice. If one looks at older buildings, for example, in tudor times, it does appear that joists were often square or nearly so. Furthermore they were often much closer to each other than might be necessary. At what point did this change? Why did it change? Was any one person responsible for this? how did this vary by country?
