This sentence too would need some further improvement but seems better representation than following sentence

.. Atheism and irreligion are not officially recognised in India. ..

An uninitiated reader might end up thinking that Atheism and irreligion are not allowed in India, where as case is more nuanced. So do we need sentence at all or can it it be improved in some way?
