Language issue

[edit]

I made edits to the "Language issue" section based on research that I am doing on Haitian language policy. One aspect of the Kreyòl language that I have found to be important in my research is its status as a primarily oral language. As a result of French slavers anti-literacy policies, there was no standard orthography for writing Kreyòl when Haiti became independent in 1804. Kreyòl poetry was first published about 100 years later. The first official efforts to create a standard orthography began the 1940s and were not complete until 1987. Because of these circumstances, Haitians have traditionally preferred to tell stories rather than writing them down. In Wikipedia’s article on Haitian literature, there is a prominent section titled “The language issue”. This entry mischaracterized the relationship between French and Kreyòl in Haiti in its choice of content and simple falsehoods about the history of Kreyòl literature. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.2.127.39 (talk) 17:20, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How long will the Haïtian language have to exist before it is classified as a language and not a "kreyòl"? Most people in Haïti have never spoken standard French. There is no imaginable scenario where we are ever going to be speaking the French of Paris or Montréal. I encounter people in the Haïtian elite who identify with French as a sort of confirmation of their elite status. Fine for them, but not for the 10,000,000 or so ordinary people who speak the more or less indigenous Haïtian language.
BTW, English began as a kreyòl of Anglo-Saxon and French, and Maltese began as a krèyol of Arabic and Italian but both now, obviously, have status as independent languages. Pascalulu88 (talk) 22:26, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should Carrié Paultre's work be added?

[edit]

I know little about Haitian literature, but recently read about Ti-Jak by Carrié Paultre. Is this significant enough to be added? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:AA71:750:553:8210:D625:F774 (talk) 23:15, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Absoliman. Li ta dwe genyen yon atik Wikipedia nan lang angle. I could translate the Haïtian language article into English. Pascalulu88 (talk) 22:35, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
