Spanish equivalent

[edit]

The page said that "Capitán de Fragata" was the Spanish name for this rank, but some googling seems to indicate that "Alférez de Navío" is closer to "Lieutenant Junior Grade" -- one rank below "Teniente de Navío", which seems to be equiv. to "Lieutenant". Perhaps the Spanish rank "Capitán de Fragata" seemed right due to the word Fragata (frigate), but that is a much higher rank equivalent to Commander, as I understand it. I think this change was not really an improvement, or not the most appropriate to make. Yes, it is true that ‘Capitán de fragata’ is not the Spanish translation of ‘Frigate lieutenant’, but neither is ‘Alférez de navío’. ‘Alférez de navío’ is the equivalent of the (US) rank of ‘Lieutenant JG’, or the UK/Commonwealth rank of ‘Acting sub-lieutenant’, but its English translation is ‘Ship-of-the-line ensign’. The Spanish translation of ‘Frigate lieutenant’ is ‘Teniente de fragata’. That title of rank is no longer used in the Spanish navy, but it is still used in Latin American navies, e.g. in Argentine. I feel that the article should state that fact of language rather than, or at least more prominently than the Spanish navy equivalence. I feel also that, in the same manner as the articles on Frigate captain and Ship-of-the-line lieutenant, the article should mention e.g. the Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian translation ‘Poručnik fregate’ and the (former) Hungarian translation ‘Fregatthadnagy’ and (former) Austrian (German) translation ‘Fregattenleutnant’, and that the separate article on that last title of rank should be merged here (and the articles Corvette lieutenant and Korvettenleutnant should be revised on similar lines). — Mithrennaith (talk) 13:58, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
