Frisian participation in the 5th crusade!

[edit]

Just because a certain historian or the remarks of a supposed historian mentioned the great participation of the Frisian contengent in these battles, should not be disregared! It seems Dutch/Frisian history has taken it as "gospel", and as such why should not we all? Can anyone offer a better explanation for the Dutch/Frisian view of this event?

It seems that there must not exist too much information period, to classify this event with any authority, especially the dates and the participants, there in involved! Remember that supposed sources for this crusade, and those that followed it, are "sparce" at the best!69.92.23.64 (talk)Ronald L. We had a lengthy discussion about the Frisians somewhere before, which led to an article about Frisian participation in the Crusades (or maybe that article came first and the discussion followed it). I'm not sure what you are referring to though because the Dutch and Frisians do not seem to be especially singled out in this article. There were certainly many countries involved, and actually the sources are not sparse, compared to other crusades (the Second Crusade for example). Do you have a more specific complaint? Oliver as leader?

[edit]

Hello all,

I would be glad if someone could provide further information on Oliver of Cologne as leader (!) of some northwestern German contingents at Damietta. As far as I know the Historia Damiatina and the Gesta crucigerorum Rhenanorum, these pilgrims/soldiers were recruited, but not led by him. He surely was one of the leading clerics, but military command was in diffderent hands (e.g. the counts of Berg, Holland, and Wied).

Thank you and have a nice evening, --Fallingdavorne (talk) 15:06, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes this is overblown, sometimes it is well-researched and appropriate. I am not sure which is the case here, I am just leaving the diff of User:Ealdgyth removing it (summary "cleanup") here for now. --dab (𒁳) 07:35, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
