This man took classes in "German, English, Latin, history" and... "hygiene"? Can anyone verify that this was actually a university-level class 100 years ago, alongside chemistry and philosophy? Peruvianllama07:08, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It says so on page 6 (page 109) of the article in the American Mathematical Monthly. The second sentence of the paragraph continuing from the previous page is:
He also studied number theory, German, English, history, hygiene, Latin and physics
How wonderfully perculiar - Face Washing 101? I think this fact alone merits interest in this article, although the fascinating story helps too. Thanks, Gerrit. Peruvianllama17:04, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"It has been suggested that the refusal of his thesis by English and German universities was because of his race."
Perhaps. But shouldn't statements like this be supported by something, if they are to appear in an encyclopedia? It's possible his thesis just wasn't good enough for the universities that rejected it. Is there a quote on record of someone in authority saying, in so many words, "This thesis is of sufficient quality, but we refuse it because its author is black."? If not, I suggest this statement be deleted from the article. Kerry (talk) 17:14, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
