deus otiosus differs from deus absconditus

[edit]

Deus otiosus refers to a god who has retired from the creation, whereas deus absconditus is used to refer to the unfathomable – and only in this sense hidden – aspect of god. Although hidden, this god is active and thus knowable/revealed through its works: deus revelatus. Deus absconditus is to the world (only) knowable as deus revelatus. These two terms usually go together, the former referring to the unknowable, real god, the latter to the god as revealed through its works.
