Aluminaut
[edit]http://science.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=126821&cid=10609804 http://www.smv.org/info/aluminautEX.htm
Most famously, Alvin was involved in the exploration of the wreckage of RMS Titanic in 1985. Launched from her support ship R/V Knorr it carried Dr.Robert Ballard and two companions to the wreckage of the great sealiner. RMS Titanic sank while attempting to transit the North Atlantic Ocean, after striking a large iceberg in 1912.
That paragraph is all wrong. Alvin did not explore the Titanic in 1985, it was 1986. And the Knorr was not the ship in the '86 mission. The Atlantis II was.
Fixed it, no need to have an obvious and easily corrected error in the article.

List of deep submergence vehicles
[edit]There is a list of deep submergence vehicles which will only get longer on this page, and aren't directly related to Alvin. Should this list be moved to its own page? —Anne Delong (talk) 06:25, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Erroneous sentence
[edit]"It is unknown, however, if a human could survive the rapid trip to the surface."
This sentence is misleading and should be deleted. Since the pressure inside Alvin's crew capsule is the same as on the ocean surface (atmospheric pressure), the speed of ascent is irrelevant. Alvin crew members shooting to the surface would experience no pressure change and therefore no ill-effects whatsoever. IF the pressure inside Alvin would be ambient pressure, i.e. what a scuba diver would be exposed to, the statement would be correct, but the whole point of a submarine is to allow humans to function at atmospheric (i.e. normal) pressure while venturing underwater.DanielStolte (talk) 23:04, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
General Mills cereal AND submersibles?
[edit]Can we get some verification that the General Mills of the cite is the General Mills breakfast cereal corp linked. This sounds unlikely that a cereal corp would bid on this contract.109.67.11.153 (talk) 19:32, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
- I noticed that too. The linked page at WHOI also says General Mills, but that must be an error. General Electric seems far more likely. But since I haven't verified, I will leave the text as-is pending confirmation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.4.239.249 (talk) 20:15, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- In the early 1960's General Mills had an aerospace and engineering group in Minneapolis that employed 200 people. That group was sold to Litton in 1963 [2]. Litton continued the Alvin's development and delivered it to Woods Hole. Litton is now part of Northrup-Grumman. Gredw (talk) 14:37, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
