Rumbow
[edit]In the old source used in the article (A History of the County of Worcester: volume 3 pp. 50-54) Rumbold (Rumbow) is listed as a hamlet in the Parish of Clent, while Walton Pool is not mentioned. Walton Pool has more than doubled in size in the last 100 years, and thanks to the motor car replacing horse and shankes' pony it is now further from Clent Church than it was then, because the distance by bridle path is shorter than by tarmacked road.
According to the online Post Office site www2.postoffice.co.uk/postcode-finder Shutmill Lane and Rumbow Lane are in Romsley for postal deliveries, (see two sample post codes B62 0LY and B62 0LX). That is not surprising as it has not been since the 1950s the the post man (on his bike), used to travel over Walton Hill from Walton Pool to deliver post in Rumbow.
- Rumbow Lane, Walton Hill, Romsley, Halesowen, B62 0LX (one of several post codes)
- Shut Mill Lane, Romsley, Halesowen, B62 0LY (one of several post codes)
However the postal addresses do not match the parish or county boarders as the hamlets close to the church parish in Clent are give a postal address of Clent, STOURBRIDGE, ... Stourbridge is the local sorting office and is in the West Midlands, (Clent is in Worcestershire and in Bromsgrove both at County Council level (Clent Hills, district ward Furlongs) and Parliamentary Constituency), but it is a reasonable indicator that Rumlbow on the other side of the Walton Hill is often not thought of as part of Clent village.
Rumbow is still part of the Parish of Clent as is Calcot on Shutmill lane, but St. Kenelms Church, Chapel Lane B62 0NG is in Romsley parish, Clent Hills county council (but a different district ward Uffdown)
Using the Ordinance Survey map (available at www.streetmap.co.uk ) The hamlets of Clent village are listed from east to west as Lower Clent, Adams Hill, Holy Cross, [Upper] Clent and Walton Pool. The distance from Lower Clent to Walton pool by road is about 2k and about 1.5k from Clent Church (Lower Clent is the furthest of those five hamlets from the parish church). The distance to Rumbow from Clent Church is about 3k by road and about 2k by a footpath over Walton Hill and about 1k from Romsley
