Leasing, purchase and abandonment
[edit]- The Canadian government took control of the CNoR in 1916, and folded its holdings into the forming Canadian National Railways (CNR) in 1918.
The Canadian Northern Railway article says " At its demise in 1923, when it was merged into the Canadian National Railway (reporting mark CN), the CNoR owned a main line between Quebec City and Vancouver via Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Edmonton." Which date is correct?
- The line was kept active by a series of small lumber mills that opened in the Lake McKenzie area. McConnell's Mill near the current intersection of McKenzie Lake Road and Ontario Highway 127 was the first of these, and later taken over by the Rathburn Lumber Company.
Did this have anything to do with the "Rathbun Lumber Company", based in Deseronto, Ontario as operator of the Bay of Quinte Railway and a steamship line? K7L (talk) 01:25, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- @K7L:The 1916 date is correct. The only news item for the CNoR in 1923 is the closure of the Toronto-Napanee line, as this was redundant with CN's own line through this area. But I'll have to read the CNoR article more carefully to be sure. As to the sawmill, I don't believe it was related, but the reference for that doesn't say one way or the other. Maury Markowitz (talk) 20:31, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ahhh, not so mysterious after all. CN controlled CNoR as a paper entity until 1923, when it and a host of other holdings controlled by CN were re-labelled under the CN marque. So they existed for a short time as a zombie brand, kind of like Sunbeam or Westinghouse. Maury Markowitz (talk) 20:34, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Rathbun was huge in its day and basically founded Deseronto, according to [1]. Its timber and mining interests extended far inland, using the rails, rivers and shipping to get resources to market. It owned the BQR, the Thousand Islands Railway and was huge in the lumber business until the underlying resources became scarce. I'd be surprised if "Rathburn" were anything other than a typographical error. K7L (talk) 01:15, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
