"Goal" against Iceland

[edit]

The article has it the wrong way round at present. The goal was credited by the stadium announcer to Robson, but James McFadden definitely scored the goal, he slide tackled the ball into the goal. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 21:47, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well apparently FIFA have given the goal to the wrong man. I suppose it's verifiable but it's nuts. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 21:55, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I corrected it to McFadden but someone reverted it with the FIFA ref as 'proof'. Barmy, there are far more references crediting it to McFadden. •Oranje•·Talk 09:02, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a few references to trusted news sources (BBC, The Times, The Guardian) to prove it was McFadden's goal - but then we all knew that from the television replays. Please don't change it back to Robson's goal. There might have been confusion from the live pictures but it's quite clear from the post-match write-ups. •Oranje•·Talk 09:14, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted to Robson because FIFA gave it to him and the press references were fairly evenly split, and I'm not going to get into an edit war over it. But, the Scottish FA have also given it to him, both in the match summary and their match report, so I don't really see how newspaper sources should take priority over the governing body of the competition and the national association? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:07, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it is pretty divided...I don't think there's any doubt that it was McFadden's (from TV replays), but not sure how we go from here: I'm not interested in an edit war either. •Oranje•·Talk 13:10, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thing is, next time Robson scores for Scotland, all the papers will say it's his second goal, regardless of what they said at the time about the goal against Iceland, because they get their press packs from the SFA, and according to the SFA, Robson and not McFadden scored against Iceland. Doesn't really matter what we think... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:22, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've reworded it a little, hope that's OK. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:46, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

I see that at some point Robson's place of birth has been changed in the article from Aberdeen to Inverurie. While there are numerous sources indicating that he did indeed grow up in Inverurie, and that it can be considered his "home town", all statistical sources I've seen say that he was actually born in Aberdeen (the nearest place with a maternity hospital, I presume). This includes the external links to Soccerbase and his official Celtic profile cited in the article, as well as publications like the Scottish Football League Review. I would presume these sort of sources would be more useful than a newspaper article that casually mentions where someone "comes from", so I've changed it back. Overtagging

[edit]

A claim was made that there is WP:OVERTAGGING. Might not be a bad claim. Shall we remove all of the individual CNs for a BLP sources tag or shall we focus our "attention on the most important one or two issues". The most important information, in my opinion is that the stats are unreferenced. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:28, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes we shall remove all of the individual CNs for a BLP sources tag because that's what the probelm is. These CNs are the cause of the overtagging 'claim'. Many of the other things are also easily fixed. i.e. career stats which were already in external links and just needed to be copied over. Adam4267 (talk) 20:12, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for entering the discussion. No we shan't remove anything until there's consensus to do so. Everything must be referenced based solely on WP:BLP rules. It wouldn't hurt to prune them, but not remove them. And it would be improper to remove any without further discussion. Or, if you'd rather, we could open this article up for discussion at the football project and the BPL project. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:34, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why should this article be subjected to different standards than every other football BLP article. The fact is that these tags have been there for over a year and a half and nothing has changed, they are clearly not improving the article. In any event they have no valid grounds to be there as it is WP:OVERTAGGING. You have not provided any valid reason for why there should be over 15 cn tags on this article and ar completely avoiding the topic of discussion. You are the one that has not entered the discussion yet. Adam4267 (talk) 21:02, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest this is ridiculous I've just spent less than 5 minutes looking for sources for some of the more obvious citation needed templates and found them with ease. The citation needed templates in the article were pure overkill and would of been better handled in my opinion with the BLP sources tag. However why don't you just look for sources for the rest shouldn't be to hard. I would but i don't have much time left.Edinburgh Wanderer 21:05, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks EW, that was good of you. I think you're right the time spent frivolously arguing over this could have been used to find refs for most of the claims in the article. I will try and find refs for the rest of them. However, I still believe that having that many CNs in any article never mind a fairly good one like this is ridiculous and should not happen. Adam4267 (talk) 21:10, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This article shouldn't be subjected to different standards than every other football BLP article. They should all be subjected to this level. The reason that they aren't is that no one is tagging them and doing so. We don't reduce the quality to the lowest possible standard, we raise them all up.
Thanks for finding the references. I'm not good at finding refs. I'm better at imposing standards and reverting vandalism. That's easier to do when there are refs to compare to incorrectly added material. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 21:25, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland v England contracts

[edit]

Most contracts of players in Scotland under contract expire at end of May not June as in England. As a result players can be registered in Scotland earlier depending on contract situation. It would be original research to say this has or has not happened therefore we should not be saying it hasnt because we cant prove that either way. Player registration rules are not the same in all places therefore its not good to assume that.Blethering Scot 22:24, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please fix transfer window with a reliable source then? While I recognize that Wikipedia is not a RS, neither are you, but we should do our best with sources. If that article isn't changed with a RS, I'll revert here. Walter Görlitz (talk) 23:48, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

International matches played since 2010

[edit]

According to the Scottish FA website he played in the following matches since 2010: 25 May 2011 Wales 1–3 Scotland, 29 May 2011 Republic of Ireland 1–0 Scotland, 11 Nov 2011 Cyprus 1–2 Scotland, 29 Feb 2012 Slovenia 1–1 Scotland A Well Fan (talk) 17:29, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wales:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/13350599, Ireland:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/scotland/13590290, Cyprus:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/scotland/15610953, Slovenia: http://www.sportinglife.com/football/live/match-report/252031/slovenia-v-Scotland Considering it was the Scottish FA's own website that said he had played those matches, I'd think they could be relied upon to be correct. Also that FIFA link only lists matches played in FIFA tournaments, meaning it only has World Cup Qualifiers he's played in, so if you go by that he's only played three games. A Well Fan (talk) 17:43, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For info, the FIFA website only lists competitive appearances; they do not include appearances in friendlies. National Football Teams gives a table listing the number of caps Robson made by year. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:00, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
