Move back?

[edit]

The new earthquake seems to have comparatively little damage reported so far - what's with the buildings already destroyed and residents evacuated. Juxlos (talk) 08:21, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New 7.0. Lombok can't catch a break. Juxlos (talk) 15:12, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Equally sized quake

[edit]

An quake nearly equal in size, 6.9, struck Lombok on August 19, hours after the 6.3 aftershock, also on August 19. SlowJog (talk) 16:10, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I added a little information about the 6.9 quake on August 19. At the time, there was no information available on casualties or damage. For now, I classified it as an aftershock. However, I don't know if a quake equal in size to the main shock should be classified as an aftershock. While I was at it, I noticed the time given for the 6.3 aftershock was an hour different than reported by the USGS. I could use some help here. SlowJog (talk) 20:00, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

By now I think that we should probably deal with this as an earthquake sequence. All four M>6 earthquakes have identical focal mechanisms. The latest 6.9 is probably not an aftershock, unless a reliable source states this. As to the time of the latest, we use UTC, which you can get from the USGS, which should be reliable. It's difficult at the moment to know how to handle all these events. There should probably be an overview article for the sequence, with individual articles for those that have caused significant damage or deaths. Mikenorton (talk) 20:26, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I like calling it an "earthquake sequence" with an overview article and individual articles for the more significant shocks. But, one issue is that the effects of the August 19 events would be hard to separate, since they were so close in time. SlowJog (talk) 23:20, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Does that mean this article should be moved? SlowJog (talk) 23:20, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You probably confused WIB with WITA. The earthquake occurred at 2018-08-19 04:10:21 UTC, Mw  6.3, USGS or 19-Aug-18 11:10:22 WIB (UTC+7), ML  6.5, BMKG (12:10:22 WITA (UTC+8)).―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 22:45, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's it. Thanks. In my edit, I tried to make the difference between local time and UTC to be 8 hours, in order to be consistent with other times. SlowJog (talk) 23:20, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Casualties

[edit]

The number of deaths caused by this earthquake is currently shown as 565. However, the source cited has a total of 563 and this refers to all of the August earthquakes from the M6.9 on the 5th onwards, so this number includes deaths caused by the aftershocks and the 19th August M6.9 separate mainshock. It is understandable that the authorities quote numbers for all of the tremors together as it may be unclear exactly which shock caused a particular death. We need to make this clear when reporting these numbers. Mikenorton (talk) 11:33, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
