THE BOAT is a 2018 Maltese genre film directed by Winston Azzopardi and written by Joe Azzopardi and Winston Azzopardi. Joe Azzopardi is the only cast member, and the film has very few spoken lines. The Boat is Winston Azzopardi’s first feature film, but he is mostly known as a line producer on films such as Troy, World War Z, 13 Hours, Assassins Creed and Murder on the Orient Express.

Produced by Latina Pictures, The Boat is based on a short film Head, for which Winston and Joe picked up the Best Short Film award at the Rome Film Festival in 2016.[1]

The film premiered at 2018 Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.[2] It was also shown at private viewings during the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, through which it secured a number of international distribution deals.[3]

Filming

Principal photography began on 8 October 2017 inside the water tanks at the Malta Film Studios. The film was shot in 22 days using two identical Beneteau First 45F5, one of which belongs to the director. During the storm scenes, Joe Azzopardi had to be brought to shore by the safety divers due to a mild hypothermia. Some minutes later he was seen back in the water eager to finish shooting.

Plot

The film stars Joe Azzopardi as a lone sailor who finds an abandoned sailboat.

Reception

The film was well-received among critics, calling it a "a work of pure mastery".[4] Winston Azzopardi was nominated for Best Director at the 2019 UK National Film Awards.[5]
