The BG is a type of British Railways MK1 coach. Generally they were used on for carrying parcels and luggage and many could normally be found on parcels and mail trains from the late 1950's until the late 1980's.

Interestingly the British Railways MK1 BG was shorter than the other types of MK1 - the BG's being 56'11" where as every other design was 63'.

A few BG's on preserved railways have been converted - such as into a disabled coach on the Severn Valley Railway and a disco coach at the Midland Railway, Butterley due to the large space either side of the guards comparment and relative 'ease' of conversion.
