Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia.

Pyromorphite
Pyromorphite is a mineral species composed of lead chlorophosphate: Pb5(PO4)3Cl, sometimes occurring in sufficient abundance to be mined as an ore of lead. First distinguished chemically by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in 1784, it was named pyromorphite by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann in 1813. It is usually green, yellow or brown in color, with a resinous lustre. Crystals are common and have the form of a hexagonal prism terminated by the basal planes, sometimes combined with narrow faces of a hexagonal pyramid. Other forms include crystals with a barrel-like curvature and globular or reniform masses. Pyromorphite is part of the apatite group of minerals and bears a close resemblance physically and chemically with two other minerals, mimetite and vanadinite. This focus-stacked photograph, merged from 26 separate images, shows a sample of pyromorphite extracted from the Resuperferolitica Mine in Santa Eufemia, in the Spanish province of Córdoba. The sample measures 3.5 cm × 3.0 cm × 1.5 cm (1.38 in × 1.18 in × 0.59 in).Photograph credit: David Ifar

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia!

In this discussion you mentioned a Russian friend. What exactly did he say? Has he actually seen the show, do you think? How reliable would you say his information is?

This is not to hassle you. I'm interested to find out. But it may well help to decide the page's fate. Andrewa 18:17, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hello DO'Neil!
I have two questions concerning the image Image:Birdparadise111.jpeg: (1) There is no additional information on the origin of this image. Probably it is your own photo? If yes, do you have a higher resolution version. I would like to use it in de:Paradiesvögel in the German Wikipedia. (2) I am not sure, if your determination of the bird is correct. I think it is Raggiana Bird-of-paradise (P. raggiana), not Greater Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea apoda). Best wishes --Franz Xaver 17:18, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer. Now I think the image may not be used in Wikipedia at all. I have found a website with this image, which might have been your source: [1] and there is a copyrigth notice. Probably the image must be deleted, as well as Image:Wilsonbirdparadise.jpeg which probably is from [2]. Best wishes --Franz Xaver 19:17, 18 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out; they probably should be deleted. DO'Neil 21:01, 18 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, DO'Neil,
Not objecting to your edits on the Pius VI article, but the old version wasn't taken from a foreign language; it was lifted from the 1911 Britannica. Complete with the typos in the scanned version that's on the Web, such as Galilean for Gallican (fixed a while ago). Some stuffy old prose there, to be sure. Dandrake 19:38, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

You are now designated the High Priest of the Spoon! and I will call on you if I feel the need for Cortes (yeah, you heard me :) to castrate someone with a wooden spoon. -- Jim Regan 04:25, 24 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Tenochtitlan

Wow! Lots of changes to Tenochtitlán. Actually, by doing so, you've come down very hard on the side of the hispanistas vs. the indigenistas with respect to the pronunciation of those names (Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan in particular -- I suppose you have to start somewhere). In recent years there's been something of a movement in Mexico to reclaim the more authentic Nahuatl pronunciation with the accent on the penultimate rather than the (Castilianified) last syllable. For the two sides of the debate, take a look (on the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua website) at what Miguel León-Portilla (indigenista) says here and how Yáñez (hispanista) rebukes him in the last para. It's been a long while since I've heard anyone pronounce it 'Tenochtitlán', but maybe that's just the company I keep.

Dunno. Perhaps you were aware of all that already and wanted to come down heavily on that side. FYI just in case you didn't. Hajor 14:32, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I wasn't aware that "Tenochtitlán" was viewed as Castilianified. Interesting. However, I'm not preferring that spelling out of any sort of racism (I have nothing against Nahuatl speakers, and why should I?), but from what I've read in books, Tenochtitlán is more common in English. I've seen Teotihuacan a few times, though. DO'Neil 06:33, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)

And the problem is, when you see them without an accent in English, you're never quite sure whether they're doing it out of conviction or because of house style (or ignorance) whereby accent marks are omitted. Presumably most serious books will be taking their cue from Spanish publications and, if this is a movement, it'll take some time to filter through into English. <shrug> Hajor 14:02, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Why did you move Mikhail Frunze to his name including his patronymic? Do you see Vladimir Putin at Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin? Everyking 07:55, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Also Pavlik Morozov. Everyking 08:03, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
On #wikipedia we decided that patronymics should be used in titles. Others from the period (Lev Borisovich Kamenev, Grigory Yevseyevich Zinoviev and Aleksandr Vasilevich Kolchak, for example) have their patronymics in their article names. Do you suggest that I should change them back to first name - last name? DO'Neil 08:23, Jun 19, 2004 (UTC)
It certainly makes more sense to me to title articles according to the most common and basic form of the name. Do you intend to move Putin as well, and Yeltsin, Gorbachev, etc.? I think that would look absurd. Everyking 09:01, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Hmm. I will move them back to first name - last name, along with Lev Borisovich Kamenev, Grigory Yevseyevich Zinoviev and Aleksandr Vasilevich Kolchak. It's inconsistent to have Vladimir Putin and Pavlik Trofimovich Morozov, you're right. DO'Neil 09:11, Jun 19, 2004 (UTC)

Technical limitations

Please limit the use of the technical limitations link to cases where the MediaWiki software (not just it's current English language Wikipedia configuration) prevents the use of a particular title. You can generally test to see whether it is a software limitation by trying to create the page at test.wikipedia.org. Limitations of policy (like use English for page names) or of configuration (UTF8 support at en wikipedia is currently partial) aren't software limitations. Jamesday 21:24, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

  1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
  2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 17:58, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

I've seen the edits that you've made to some of the articles I've written. I always check out the person who edits anything related to me and I checked you out. I'm really impressed with your ideals and with the fact that you are facinated with Latin-American topics. I have dedicated all of my energy to the topic of Puerto Rico, which is my specialty. Since you're Irish, I was wondering if you would be interested in writting about the Irish migration to Puerto Rico in the mid 1800's. The Spanish government fearing an uprising from the native Puerto Ricans, encouraged the people of Ireland and Corsica (That's where my descendents came from) to migrate to the island, hopeing that they would be loyal to the Spanish Crown. Even though they adopted the language and the culture, they kept their surnames: O'Neil, Cole, McKintock, Garrity etc. By the way, my grandaughter is half-Irish. So, what do you say? Tony the Marine

I'd love the opportunity to write about it, and I'll begin Irish immigration to Puerto Rico if I can get enough information on the subject. DO'Neil 05:19, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

Take care my Irish friend Tony the Marine

Italian aircraft

Hi DO'Neil - Italian aircraft are sadly a bit neglected here, so thanks for adding another two! I just wanted to point out the new standard format for specifications that's been in use since last August - Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft/page content. I'd be a real help if you could use this layout for your next aircraft articles. Cheers! --Rlandmann 01:20, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Just out of curiosity, why has the table fallen out of favour? I think it looks quite a bit nicer than just having "raw statistics". DO'Иeil 08:05, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
Also, I just created Piaggio P.108 (another Italian bomber!). I used the table because I wasn't sure what to do, I can change it to something else if that would be preferable. DO'Иeil 10:05, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)
The main argument against the table was that it's harder for new editors to work with. Furthermore, they were/are vulnerable to changes in the Wiki software - if you take a look around, you'll see plenty of aircraft articles with data tables now in a font that's too small to easily read - this happened because the table was designed before Wikipedia's last "facelift". Finally, a couple of WikiProject Aircraft participants (the prime movers behind the changeover) argued strenuously for text-based specifications on aesthetic grounds. To see an example of the new format implemented for a WWII bomber, take a look at Petlyakov Pe-8. Cheers --Rlandmann 22:45, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Reference desk query - Hungarian WWII propaganda poster

If you are still looking for the answer of your query about the Image:Azertis.jpg war propaganda poster: "Azért is" means "In spite of all" in this context - it is an expression of defiance. Either because in the war the tides were turning against the fascists in Hungary -- or, if it is an earlier poster, as an expression of defiance against the unjust terms of the treaty of Trianon (equivalent of Versailles treaty for Hungary) after WWI. The chains might represent the bonds of this surrender treaty. - Marcika 04:21, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You may not be aware that the fair use exception requires a separate justification for each use of an image, and it difficult to make a fair use argument outside of the main article namespace. Please see Wikipedia:Fair_use#Images for details. Cheers, Bovlb 07:54, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, do you have the source for this... or why you put it as GFDL? Thanks. gren グレン 08:45, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It came from [marxists.org Marxists.org], which states that all of its content is GFDL. —DO'Иeil 08:47, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of Hitler & Blondi

The picture you have uploaded of Hitler and his dog Image:Hitlerwithblondi.jpg has been tagged for deletion. It is not public domain since German law requires life of author +70 years. Please go to the image's page and say where you got it from, that way you can also add a fair-use tag with proper rationale. Thanks. Andrew Levine 17:23, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I was wondering if you could provide the source of this image—someone has written wishing to reprint it but does not know where it came from to attribute it or ask about the copyright status. Also, all fair use images must be sourced to comply with fair use guidelines. Thanks, Mindspillage (spill yours?) 16:07, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not much trouble, just told her that sorry, we weren't sure. Also, the book would almost certainly have sufficient source information on it; no reason to delete if you could look that up. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 17:51, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:Shoebill.jpeg

Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Shoebill.jpeg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. =====

Hi there, I'm a 19yo student from Poland (cultural studies about Spain and Latin America), and after having seen just a small part of your articles I'd be delighted to help you in anyway you'd like - regarding Poland, as well as Latin America or military history. I'm not a wikipedist myself, but - not being humble - I often find my knowledge of many very strange topics quite profound and would like to share it, if anybody's interested. Oh, btw, i'm a bit of leftist myself. Ok, a big one. Juru

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure either. My mother brought it back from a trip to Belgium, and it hangs on a hook on the wall behind the computer. It's pretty neat, though, even if it is kind of screwed up. —DO'Neil 20:57, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Location of Artillery piece

Hiyas, was just looking at your picture of the M96nA German artillery piece, and was wondering where this gun is on display. Its physical location isn't mentioned over at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Capturedgermanartillery.JPG. Cheers, Bezapt 10:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The M96nA I photographed is actually on display in a war veterans' retirement home here in Sydney, Australia, just outside the home's museum. It's next to a Bofors AA gun, which I also photographed and uploaded to Wikipedia. If you're in Sydney yourself, I could give you an exact address if you'd like. Sorry it took me so long to reply to your question. —DO'Neil 02:56, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again! was just wondering if at least the suburb where the retirement home is could be added to the picture page, just to help anchor the whereabouts of the artefact in space & time! Bezapt 03:47, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the specific location to the Commons description page. —DO'Neil 03:50, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shamisen photo

Cool. We don't have street shamisen players that I know of in the U.S., though we had shamisen player give a concert at my univ. a few weeks ago. Try to find out who the guy is and how he picked up the instrument next time you see him. I think the photo from the other angle was better than the one you put in the article. Badagnani 06:59, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He's probably Japanese, as probably only an extremely small number of gaijin take this thing up (as opposed to the shakuhachi and koto, which are more popular). I've played the sanxian, which is the original Chinese verison of the instrument, with a snakeskin (as opposed to cat skin) face. Are you in Seedney? In case you're interested, I'm in one of only a handful of bush bands in the States. Badagnani 09:49, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tu 134.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Unspecified source for Image:Azertis.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Azertis.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:08, 15 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Iamunknown 06:08, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Dumitru Prunariu.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Dumitru Prunariu.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Unspecified source for Image:Todor Zhivkov.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Todor Zhivkov.jpg.

If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self-no-disclaimers tag can be used to release it under the GFDL.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nicke L 13:52, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Andreas_baader.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Image:Italianeastafricamap.jpeg

Thanks for uploading Image:Italianeastafricamap.jpeg.

Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 12:24, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Identified Aircraft

Hi Daniel,

Just a heads-up that I identified your aircraft for you on the Ref Desk. It is Fokker F28 VH-ATG, belonging to the Australian Federal Department of Transport [3][4]. It was sold to a Canadian airline as C-FTAY in 1998. FiggyBee 22:07, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello DO'Neil, an automated process has found an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, such as fair use. The image (Image:Zhugderdemidiyn Gurragcha.jpg) was found at the following location: User:DO'Neil/Images Uploaded/Photographs. This image or media will be removed per statement number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media will be replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. The image that was replaced will not be automatically deleted, but it could be deleted at a later date. Articles using the same image should not be affected by my edits. I ask you to please not re-add the image to your userpage and could consider finding a replacement image licensed under either the Creative Commons or GFDL license or released to the public domain. Please note that it is possible that the image on your page is included vie a template or usebox. In that case, please find a free image for the template or userbox. Thanks for your attention and cooperation. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 08:40, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Daddydontdrink.jpeg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Daddydontdrink.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:45, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for Image:Churchdesecrationposter.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Churchdesecrationposter.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Non-free use disputed for Image:Rodolfograziani.JPG

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Rodolfograziani.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:33, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:János_Kádár.jpeg

Thanks for uploading Image:János_Kádár.jpeg.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 13:11, 14 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lokal_Profil 13:11, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

non-commercial use only

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:Felipequispe.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[5][6]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license GFDL-self to license it under the GFDL, or to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use PD-self to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 19:23, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Azertis.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Azertis.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rlest 12:02, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Giuliano de' Medici by Sandro Botticelli.jpeg, by Sailko (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Giuliano de' Medici by Sandro Botticelli.jpeg fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

now on commons Image:Giuliano de' Medici by Sandro Botticelli.jpeg

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Giuliano de' Medici by Sandro Botticelli.jpeg, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 09:12, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 23:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Image tagging for Image:Anton_Denikin.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Anton_Denikin.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Fair use disputed for Image:AshRaTempelselftitledalbum.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:AshRaTempelselftitledalbum.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Boris vladimirski lenin in red dawn.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Boris vladimirski lenin in red dawn.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Replaceable fair use Image:Georgi Ivanov.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Georgi Ivanov.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 01:53, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Mexempire2.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Mexempire2.JPG.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:07, 6 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --John Bot III (talk) 15:07, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Paigcsoldiers.jpeg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Paigcsoldiers.jpeg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

A tag has been placed on Image:AshRaTempelselftitledalbum.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with no fair use rationale uploaded after May 4, 2006 which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Francisco de orellana stamp.PNG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Francisco de orellana stamp.PNG.

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:Shaddamiv.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Shaddamiv.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:GojkoMiticRevolver.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello DO'Neil! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 329 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the unreferencedBLP tag. File permission problem with File:Pierre vallières.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Pierre vallières.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or

File source problem with File:Pedro de Alvarado.JPG

Thank you for uploading File:Pedro de Alvarado.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:29, 7 October 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fleet Command (talk) 03:29, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Education in the People's Republic of Poland has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File permission problem with File:Trabant601.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Trabant601.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. Fair use rationale for File:KarlEduardVonSchnitzlerScreenshot.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:KarlEduardVonSchnitzlerScreenshot.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Non-free use of File:Kamov Ka-22.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Kamov Ka-22.jpg. However, there is a concern that the use of the image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Details of this problem, and which specific criteria that the image may not meet, can be obtained by going to the image description page. If you feel that this image does meet those criteria, please place a note on the image description or talk page explaining why. Do not remove the di-fails NFCC tag itself.

An administrator will review this file within a few days, and having considered the opinions placed on the image page, may delete it in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion or remove the tag entirely. Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture. I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Better source request for File:Szczecin CoA.png

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of automated file description generation

Your upload of File:40mmboforsseat.JPG or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Thanks for uploading File:Drukqs album cover.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:37, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Sakhalin map.png

Thanks for uploading File:Sakhalin map.png, which you've attributed to Online Map Creation. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 13:56, 13 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File:Szczecin Flag.png needs authorship information

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Szczecin Flag.png appears to be missing information as to one (or more) of the following :

  1. The author or creators of the work, (including information as to the author's lifespan).
  2. Where and how this particular version was obtained.
  3. When the work was created,

If you did provide such information, it is currently confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the own template.

Please also add authorship and sourcing to other files you created or uplopaded. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:50, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Fordlândia requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.thevintagenews.com/2016/05/31/abandoned-in-the-rainforest-henry-fords-fordlandia-was-to-be-inhabited-by-10000-people-to-secure-a-source-of-cultivated-rubber-for-his-cars/2. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Notice

The file File:Leonardo Loredano.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned image. Higher resolution image already available and in use on Commons at File:Giovanni Bellini, portrait of Doge Leonardo Loredan.jpg.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  ★  Bigr Tex 21:37, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
