Mac|Life is a U.S. magazine focusing on the Apple Macintosh personal computer and related products, including the iPod. It was previously published under the name MacAddict, but was rebranded as Mac|Life beginning with the February 2007 issue.[1][2][3] Although referred to here as MacILife the correct name of the magazine is MacLife, the name used by the magazine itself.

History

From 1994 to 1996, a magazine entitled CD-ROM Today was published by Imagine Publishing and the brainchild of editor, Cheryl England and Imagine founder, Chris Anderson (now known as Future US). This magazine, targeted for both PC and Macintosh computer users, included a CD of demo software with each issue. In late 1996, this magazine was split into two separate publications: Boot (now known as Maximum PC), for PC users; and MacAddict for Macintosh users.[4] As with the original CD-Rom Today, both magazines included CDs containing software.

MacAddict was the first North American magazine focused on the Apple Macintosh to include a CD-ROM (known as "The Disc") with every issue. Contents of the CD-ROM included software (including shareware and demo versions of programs), and previews of what was in the hardcopy form of the magazine. In its earliest years, the magazine was responsible for many QuickTime videos that depicted editors smashing personal computers that ran the Windows operating system. Later videos departed from that concept, yet every CD still contained a "Staff Video". The MacAddict website was updated daily with news relevant to Apple products.

As of June 2006, the magazine had the second largest audited total circulation in North America among Macintosh-focused magazines (with a rate base of 110,000), after Macworld, as well as the second-largest audited newsstand sales.

The January 2006 was the last MacAddict issue. The magazine that replaced it, "Mac|Life", no longer included the CD-ROM nor its popular "Max" mascot. The new magazine was physically larger than the old MacAddict and was focused on the creativity of Mac users.

Reviewing System

From 1996 to mid-2002, there were four rating icons, which depicted Max. There was "Blech" (the lowest), "Yeah, Whatever" (a mediocre product), "Spiffy" (a solid yet not perfect product), and "Freakin' Awesome" (the highest). After 2002, it was replaced by a more conventional five-point system.

Mac|Life Forums

The Web site also features an active message board which is the largest forum to run on PunBB forum software.[5] The forum has over 25,000 registered users and receives about 2,000 posts every day.[5] Discussion ranges on a variety of topics; the magazine itself, computers and gadgets (both made by Apple and otherwise) and more wide-ranging personal and political issues.
