Sobor, Hungary ?: new section

It seems to me that, in addition to the word's regular meaning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada uses the term sobor to mean a large church serving a wide area that is not a cathedral. For example in Alberta they have St. John Cathedral and St. Andrew "Sobor" (both in Edmonton) and in Saskatchewan they have Holy Trinity Cathedral in Saskatoon and Descent Of The Holy Spirit "Sobor" in Regina (see: http://www.uocc.ca/en-ca/parishes/search.asp). Am I understanding this right? Do other orthdox churches use the term this way? --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 16:36, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Sobor, Hungary ?
@ShelfSkewed Hungarian is not a Slavic language (or even an Indo-European language) so is Sobor, Hungary an example of "a word in Slavic languages"? Looking in an on-language dictionary, there is a Hungarian word "sobor" which means "statue".

I'm inclined to delete that link from this page but seek some advice first. Vincent J. Lipsio (talk) 17:41, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Other uses of term

It seems to me that, in addition to the word's regular meaning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada uses the term sobor to mean a large church serving a wide area that is not a cathedral.
