Wikiversity

[edit source]

I saw your name on the Wikiversity participant's list, you may be very experienced in mathematics already, but I'm trying out instructing a Calculus course if you're interested, go to Wikiveristy, check out the mathematics department, pure mathematics, and in the course list is included Calculus. It seems like you have experience with other wikiprofessors, so I hope you keep in mind that I am new at this. Fephisto 22:40, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just a quick question. What timezone are you in? --Aya 22:37, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. I have been on vacation. I'm still not sure how I am going to be running the course, so if you'd like to, you are more than welcome to help out, or even be assitant/co - professor. I know a bit about the Great War but I am not an expert, so having two people might make a big improvement on the course. Since the course is somewhat provisional in nature, I don't know that I am going to have people write essays. I think it might be more appropriate to do it seminar style and have guided discussions where people learn not just from the professor but from other students. Let me know what you think. --Polizano 14:23, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

WWI Class

[edit source]

The class will not meet at a scheduled time. On the discussion page, I've commented, based on user feedback, on what the class will likely be like. I think you should have no problems fulfilling the expectations of students, especially if you already have some notes on specialized topics. Please register for the class if you are still interestined. --Polizano 5 July 2005 00:48 (UTC)

Cookbook:Lembas

[edit source]

when marking a copyvio you remove the violatory text

Any particular reason? It occurs to me that the violatory text is still easily available from the history, so it's not as if removing it makes any odds from a legal standpoint. From a functional standpoint, I think leaving it in makes it easier for other users to confirm that the page is indeed a copyvio. When I re-wrote Wikibooks:Deletion policy (hopefully much clearer now), I specified that the template should just preprend the text, not replace it, but I didn't change the template to match. What do you think? - Aya T C 18:47, 1 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Programming:C++

[edit source]

Hi, I just noticed your failed efforts at merging the 2 books. I would like to clarify a few things.

I didn't intend the C++ book to be just an overview. [You had said: But enough of that, I've just thought of a different solution for these somewhat incongruous projects working together... you could have your content as in-depth examination of his overview.] What I wanted was to deal with only standard C++ and deal with various C++ libraries, various C++ development environments, etc. in other separate books. But this is a minor point.

My main problem was Panic's obsession with multi-gigabyte pages, and his totally restructuring the talk page, removing (and not archiving) some of my proposals, and his forking of the book as well as the talk page. Also I had already mentioned using transclusions to generate gargantuan pages to Panic (see [1]) but he didn't yet split all content into separate pages that can be transcluded in one big page.

A few other problems with Panic that I noticed earlier follow. He wasn't keen on NPOV, being subjective at times. He kept copying stuff from Wikipedia without bothering about the transwiki process, and thus violating the copyrights of the Wikipedia contributors by not making available a history of the GFDL-licensed Wikipedia text. He also kept copying stuff from other C++ books (probably GFDL'd but still the copying was without credit).

I'm not sure if any of the above problems were addressed by Panic since looking at that gargantuan page wastes my time and increases my wikistress.

Thanks! -- Paddu 14:16, 2 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Let me add that one major reason I'm not working on Programming:C plus plus is to reduce the effort of merging (the other reason being don't seem to find much time to work on it, but even when I find time I work on the 'pedia and other things rather than this book to reduce the effort of merging). I really don't like having 2 forks on which different people would be adding different things, making the merge all the more difficult. It is hence unfair for Panic to say that Programming:C plus plus is the "dormant" fork and Programming:C -/- -/- is the "active" fork and hence the latter must not be merged into the former, etc.
If it can is definite that the two books would never be merged, I would like to know so I can start working on the book. Thanks! -- Paddu 19:13, 13 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hey Garrett. I noticed some edits to Programming:C plus plus in July where you said "please don't use transclusions" and then some comments about a merge. Since you seem to know more about this than I do, what's the story? What did you mean by no transclusions (as that would be the solution to the fork problem)? It seems going forward we should have a single C++ book. Or, perhaps two: one as a complete reference, the other as a tutorial on the basics. What are your thoughts and can you fill me in on the story? Thanks! :-) MShonle 22:06, 7 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Manual of Crime

[edit source]

Hi Garrett: I think we need to step back and ask not if the MoC is legal or useful, but if it's appropriate for the project. This sounds like something for a wikicity for me. It's not like we're a censor board, with infinite power, determining what can be on the web or not. Instead, we're just voting, What kind of books do we want in this little digital library we're making for ourselves? What would give you more pride, being part of a project that taught kids math, or being part of a project that taught kids to blow things up? MShonle 18:48, 18 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Restructure Christianity

[edit source]

Even this heading is thought provoking. To cater to the casual reader I restored links as before. We can flip-flop The Book and The Overview anytime. I can move The Book to The New Testament (Annotated) if the Overview takes off. MShonle seemed to say that Wikibooks does not want the all-inclusive Christian meeting place which would be the Overview. I propose to leave everything like it is until it cools off. WikiChristian.org is back and that may be where the casual Christian should go. It is worthwhile as well as unique, being a private initiative. Also, TOC breaks up the background of The Book page - Athrash | {Talk) 19:34, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wikiversity core service courses

[edit source]

Please think about adding a history course to the list of Core Courses. It looks like there are a few history articles on Wikipedia that have disputes. Maybe a wikiversity history research project would be a good Wikiversity core "course" to help get Wikiversity off the ground while helping to improve some disputed Wikipedia articles. --JWSurf 04:25, 19 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your insightful help on Wikijunior's Dinosaurs, I have almost singlehandedly written the Wikijunior Dinosaur book, but I am pleased that the spark is now begining to spread, and the book is begining to develop. Any help recieved is much apreciated. I just you should know this. It appears as if other editors are jumping on board as well. Wether or not this was just some side editing or you are going to also contribute in the future, any editing is greatly apreciated, for on Wiki everyone is truly equal, and each edit propells the book to a higher level of perfection. Hope to come accross your path in future projects. Peace, and may the edit be with you. Pampaeditor

A note on the discussion page of this module indicates that you have made an attempt to contact the copyright holder for the content on this Wikibook. I'm just trying to check in with this and try to see if you have indeed done that and if you have recieved any comment on way or the other about the copyright status. I'm just trying to keep up on what is happening and not to let this book slip through the cracks here on Wikibooks. --Rob Horning 01:59, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

FFII Page

[edit source]

Just so you know, the reason we don't redirect the FFII page to FFIV, going off of the U.S. numbering system, is because we want to distinguish FFII because of the final fantasy template which lists all the games in the series. In the event that we actually get a guide up and running for each game, we'd need to tell them apart.--BigCow 17:40, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: Videogame transwikiing method

[edit source]

You mentioned the use of MWDumper to transwiki.

Actually, what I am interested in is a way to remove guides from this wiki, Wikibooks, after transwiki. Currently, if we move a guide to Strategy Wiki or elsewhere, then it is a fork; a copy remains at Wikibooks. I would like to have a Wikibooks policy that allows us to delete these guides.

Wikibooks:Deletion policy already allows us to use {{transwiki}} to delete stuff, but that only applies for transwikis to other Wikimedia projects. However, if most Wikibookians support it, then we can change the deletion policy to let us delete moved computer and video game guides. --Kernigh 18:51, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I really see no problem in deleting pages that have been transwikied - to my mind, Jimbo's amendment to policy allows them to be deleted anyway as being outside the scope of Wikibooks (point 7 on the proposed Wikibooks:Deletion policy), although in practice they won't be deleted until they have been moved elsewhere. As far as the transwiki'ing point is concerned, point 4 on the proposed policy makes no references to the wiki being a WMF wiki.) I'd also be ok about allowing the book title page to contain a link through to the new location for a short while - a year, say.
Could I ask you, however, to expand on how the process of getting the games books over to StrategyWiki would work? I have a number of questions:
  1. When would it happen?
  2. How long would it take?
  3. How would we know what has been transwikied?
  4. How would we know what the entire contents of any one book has been transwikied? (at which point we can delete the book from wikibooks)
  5. How would we know what will be transwikied?
  6. What would happen if the authors of a book did not want it to go to StrategyWiki?
  7. Do you need help from Wikibookians, including Wikibooks admins, for the transwiki'ing to occur? If so, what?

FF7 transwikiing - some missing pages

[edit source]

Hewwo, you're transwikiing stuff to StrategyWiki? Quite a few templates ended up being missing from StrategyWiki when FF7 wikibook went there, and all of the images of the guide as well, as well as some talk subpages... I've listed them all in Talk:Final Fantasy VII. --Wwwwolf 15:39, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Transwiki'ing

[edit source]

Great work so far. I hope the ones you have transferred to StrategyWiki are bedding down well. May I ask about the guides still listed at Wikibooks:Books possibly in contravention with WIW? Are you intending to move the remaining ones? I saw you instituted a personal moratorium whilst Jimbo answered some questions, but I believe he has now dealt with those issues and that it is clear all game guides have to go. new user trying to help

[edit source]

Hi,

I was looing at the Forth book and noticed that it was in the wrong location.

Since I have spent some time on WP, WB looks familure, and I moved the book to it's new location Forth.

I also moved the chapters from Programming:Forth: to the corrected locations and added {{vfd}}, {{Cleanup-NC}}, and #REDIRECT ((to new location)) to the top of each page (I know that the REDIRECTS will not work, but they point that the page information was moved.

I then added the pages to Wikibooks:Votes for deletion so that they could be deleted.

But I still have a link on Wikibooks:Programming languages bookshelf because I can not edit that page it still points to the Programming:Forth page. If that was cleaned up, I could then add Programming:Forth to the Wikibooks:Votes for deletion page since all of the pages have been relocated to the correct spots and once that is done, I can start editing the Forth book.

I looked on the Help:Administrators for someone who looks like they are on fairly often and found you.

If you would please help me, with that last piece.

Thank you,

Imp

Wikibooks:General voting rules/Proposal

[edit source]

I want to call the attention of all wikibookians, especially active admins to the discussion about the new voting policy. Wikibooks currently does not have a concrete voting policy in effect, so the adaptation of this policy will potentially create immediate differences in the way business is conducted here. Due to large amounts of discussion, changes, and dissention, there are several versions of this policy being considered:

Also, there are additional issues being discussed, such as the inclusion of a "minimum contributions" clause, that will limit users with less then 20 votes from editing. Also, there is a proposed clause that would allow this 20 vote minimum to be raised in response to abuse.

I am sending this same message to all currently active admins. I hope you are able to come in and give your opinions on this matter. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 20:47, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

[edit source]

Could you do a favor for me? I need an administrator to delete part of the history of The Computer Revolution. Someone vandalised this page and the vandalism has been reverted, but they also vandalised the edit summary, so every time I look at the history of this article I see the word ____ written over and over again. I understand if you don't want to do it, you might not want to if you don't want to look at words like that. Thank you! --24.71.223.148 03:51, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Transwiki Special:Import question

[edit source]

Hiya, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about mediawiki for a work project. I have a running version with extensions and restricted namespaces working. I'm trying to figure out how to make it easy for users to copy a page/article from a restricted namespace to the main namespace. The transwiki stuff is a little confusing to me, but I think some of the functionality could be adapted to what I need. In looking at this page MediaWiki Administrator's Handbook/Importing, I'm trying to find the functionality displayed in the first screenshot included below. My installation has the XML import for Special:Import, but I don't see this option anywhere or a way to configure it. Is this a custom page you have on wikibooks? Please pardon my ignorance, especially if I am way off track even asking you about this.

Also leaving this on SB Johnny's talk page.

Re:Help books

Thanks for the input on the help books, it's good to see an existing example of it, to show that it is a successful and viable idea.
