Germanic cognates include Old Saxon fifoldaro, Old High German fifaltra, Old English fifalde, Old Norse fifrildi. More distantly related to Latin papilio (“butterfly”), Old Prussian pepelis (“a bird”), Lithuanian papelučkà (“moth, owlling”).
