From Proto-Finnic *udar, from Proto-Finno-Permic *utare, borrowed from an Indo-Iranian language,[1] ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ówHdʰr̥ (udder). Compare Sanskrit ऊधर् (ūdhar). Cognate to Estonian udar (udder), Livvi udareh (udder), Erzya одар (odar, udder), and Eastern Mari водар (vodar, udder).
