hobune

editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Finnic *hëpoinën, a diminutive of now-obsolete hobu. Further origin unknown, but possibly a Germanic loan, or from some descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos. Compare e.g. Ancient Greek ἵππος (híppos, “horse”). Cognate with Finnish hevonen.

Usage notes
editThe shorter form hobu is used in compounds.
