Etymology

edit

Origin uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *glēsijaną (to shine, glare). Alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *glaiwisōną (to make bright, make shiny), from Proto-Germanic *glaiwiz (shining, light, bright), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰley- (to shine). If so, then related to Old Norse glær (light, bright, clear).
