Etymology
editFrom Ottoman Turkish آتش (ateş, “fire”), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (ataş, “fire”),[1] ultimately from Persian آتش (âtaš).[2] Replaced od (“fire”), the native Turkic word for fire. According to Urusbiev (1963:51) composed of at- (“to shoot, fire”) + -ş.[3]
