Borrowed from Swedish desman (“musk” as in desmanråtta “muskrat”), from older desma, desme, from Middle Low German dēsem, from Old Saxon desamo, alteration of *besamo, from Late Latin bisamum (musk), from Hebrew בשם (bāśām, bōśem). Doublet of Bisam and Balsam.
