From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ta-t (to put, to place). Cognate with Tibetan སྟད (stad, to put on, to lay on), སྟ་གོན (sta gon, preparation, arrangement), Old Chinese (OC *taʔ, *tas, *da, *taɡ, *daɡ, “to touch”) (STEDT).
