From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śánkatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćánkatay, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱenk- (to waver, be in suspense). Cognate with Latin cunctor (to delay, stall, hold up), Old English hangian (whence English hang).
