Etymology

From northern Middle High German rūpe, from Middle Low German rūpe, itself perhaps from Proto-Germanic *rūpō and then probably related with *raupijaną, whence German raufen (to pluck, pick, harvest). Cognate with Middle Dutch rupe, whence dialectal Dutch ruip. Also related with standard Dutch rups.
