editWelcome and editing tips
editI just noticed that you created some articles on my to-do list, including Fyodor Shikunov, and would like to thank you for that.
I also noticed that some of the content seemed to be machine-translated and not proofread afterwords, resulting in several issues. I hope you don't mind that I offer you a few suggestions to improve and reccomdend some resources that many other Wikipedians find helpful.
- Dates - use DMY dates in articles not US-related. And keep the date formatting consistent throughout the article
- Photographs - Unlike many countries, Russia's copyright law countdowns are based on date of publication, not date of creation, and Commons does not permit assuming legal publication of a work in the creation year when specific publication sources are unknown. So in general, stick to using the local fair-use upload form for Soviet portraits (unless you get REALLY lucky happen to find a really old newspaper/magazine featuring the photo without attribution and the author remains unknown)
- Award lists - don't bother adding the ribbon bar icons next to award names in a table, just make a plain bulleted list instead. It's easier to standardize, takes less time, involves less drama, etc.
- Resources - goskatalog.ru is a great place to find fair-use photographs. Googlebooks has partial digitizations of quite a few Soviet and Russian books. If you need information from any of these books, feel free to ask.

editHi thanks for creating this new article. Is it partly a translation of the Russian wiki article? If so I need to add a special template. Thanks Mccapra (talk) 12:04, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
@Mccapra: Yes. It is partly a translation of the Russian wiki article. Toadboy123 (talk) 8:24, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. You’ll see I’ve added a translation template to the article talk page. Any time you base an en.wiki article on another wiki can you please add that so we have the proper attribution for copyright purposes. All the best Mccapra (talk) 14:29, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Vandalism
editListen I respect ur work but you have no right to remove the work of other. 90% of this article has my contribution. You continue removing my work all the time. Plz stop this and let everyone does it's job. What prob you have? Arorapriyansh333 (talk) 05:39, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
@Arorapriyansh333: I also respect your work too. But, why are you adding unnecessary illustrations to the article? Its too congesting when you add multiple images. A few images are only needed considering that much of 1970s and 1980s Teresa Teng's images are not available in public domain yet. So I am requesting you to understand that a few images are only needed. Don't too much illustrations because it causes congestion to the article and its paragraphs. It's not vandalism when I try to rectify this. Toadboy123 (talk) 05:50, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
Obviously you have right to rectify. I'll adjust the image according to what you say. You should state the reason for why you remove or replacing the image so that it do not cause confusion to other user. Arorapriyansh333 (talk) 06:13, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

This is your final warning. Further violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy will result in you being blocked from editing.— Diannaa (talk) 23:22, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
@Diannaa: I understand and I apologise. I will try my best to avoid this happening again. I get the veterantributes.org, but why did you remove materials from Air Force Magazine, since its public domain material? And also I carefully paraphrased the Titus' quote on May 1967 aerial combat from Air Force Magazine, and why was that removed too?— Toadboy123 (talk) 23:45, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- Air Force Magazine is published by the Air Force Association, not the Air Force. The page is marked as "Copyright 2020". The content you copied from there was not identical but it was nowhere near sufficiently paraphrased. — Diannaa (talk) 03:25, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

I also strongly suspect that you are the same person as repeat copyright violator and sockmaster User:Books Nash, as you have edited the same suite of articles with similar types of additions. Also, two of the copyright violations you have added are from Veteran Tributes, from which he repeatedly copied, in violation of our copyright policy. — Diannaa (talk) 13:54, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Request reason:
I am not related to any blocked user. I didn't engage in copyright infringement. I only copied the text of the award citation, to state the description of the mission for which Royal B. Allison received the Silver Star for, as award citations are in public domain due to it being a work made by a member of the US Armed Forces. Regarding the source, I took it from Military Times, which contains comprehensive listing of US award citations and I even had cited the source in the text I copied for the article. I have made major contributions to variety of topics in Wikipedia and I have been very careful when it comes to paraphrasing and using public domain sources in articles. I believe I have been blocked due to the misunderstanding of the situation. So, I request you to consider in unblocking me and I will be careful while editing.
Accept reason:
I have double checked and the content you copied was from his Silver Star citation, and is therefore public domain. More information on how to do this properly below. — Diannaa (talk) 13:10, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
Hello Toadboy123. Sorry for the mistake. The content you copied was from the subject's silver star citation, and is therefore in the public domain. It's present in several places online, including the Veteran Tributes website as well as the militarytimes.com website you used as your citation. Note that the militarytimes.com website is not a publication of the US Govt or Army, and is protected by copyright. However the citations are public domain. Since the website itself is not public domain, and I am unable to find his silver star citation at the DoD website (which only goes back to 2001), it's best to frame this as a quotation from the citation. I have done so.
If the source where you find the material is public domain, you can copy from it. If you do so, you need to add the template {{PD-notice}}
as part of your citation. Here's an example of how to do it. — Diannaa (talk) 13:30, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much. I will use this method when it comes to framing citations. I also hope that this situation won't happen again and I hope to do my best in expanding and contributing to Wikipedia. Toadboy123 (talk) 14:25, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Jonathan Mann.jpg
editHello Toadboy123,
I would like to add the "Jonathan Mann.jpg" image to the "Calderone Prize" article, however I believe that the uploader (in this case, you) would need to add a detailed non-free use rationale for each article the image is used in. Though I'm not entirely sure how this process works. Can you please assist me in this? Thank you! PantinFR (talk) 14:07, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
- Regarding you wanting "Jonathan Mann.jpg" image to the "Calderone Prize" article, I don't a image under fair-use can be used in more than one article since it would violate the rationale of fair-use. I believe you can add the freely licensed image of Jonathan Mann via Wikimedia Commons. Toadboy123 (talk) 22:39, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi there
I was going to draftify this given there is not a single secondary reliable source, but given your tenure I would prefer to give you the opportunity to please address the tags or point me to a guideline which states ambassadors are inherently notable? I may have missed such a guideline. I am of the view ambassadors need to meet WP:ANYBIO or GNG the same as others - please advise.
Thanks
MC MaxnaCarta (talk) 02:33, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- I am not too sure about whether ambassadors need to meet WP:ANYBIO or GNG. But I think ambassadors from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, India and Israel, which have much resumes regarding their diplomats published, or diplomats who had prior diplomatic or political background, could be allowed under WP:ANYBIO or GNG. But am I am not too sure about it and if you feel that this article does not meet notability, then you are welcome to nominate it for deletion. Toadboy123 (talk) 03:10, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Ma Hui (diplomat) moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Ma Hui (diplomat), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 14:41, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:James Dresnok.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:James Dresnok.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Jho Low dp.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Jho Low dp.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Zhou Jiangyong pic.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Zhou Jiangyong pic.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 08:10, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Toadboy123. Someone has said at an offwiki discussion forum that this article was translated from Chinese Wikipedia. You seem to have written just about all the text of the article. If you did use translated text at any time in constructing the article, it needs to be acknowledged to satisfy copyright. See here. That policy page specifies that when translated text is used, there should be an edit summary that includes the title of the source article; if you translate all or part of a foreign-language article in future, please do this. But it's also important to have Template:Translated page on the article talk page, especially when the edit summary didn't happen. I can't read Chinese so I can't verify whether the article does use translated text. If it does, can you please add the template to Talk:Murder of Jiang Ge? I presume it would be {{translated page|zh|江歌案}}; version number is not necessary. If this person is correct, thanks in advance. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:59, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- I have added the translated page template to acknowledge the translation from Chinese Wikipedia was used in the English version of the article. Toadboy123 (talk) 11:14, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Problem with DYK for Sun Haiyan
editHello! I have temporarily removed the DYK for Sun scheduled for a couple days from now, reading * ... that Sun Haiyan was the shortest-serving Chinese ambassador to Singapore, with a tenure of 14 months?. As far as I can see, that fact is not contained within either source given in the article, as they simply state that her 14-month tenure was short. Please add a source to the article reflecting that her tenure was the shortest ever, or suggest a preferred ALT hook (with a source). Thank you! If we act quickly, the hook can be restored soon. —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:00, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Regarding recent edit
editHello, I noticed you changed the picture back on Murder of Junko Furuta. Can you explain why? The old one was used for years and well known. The new one looks like an edited version of a different picture. How is it okay instead of the other one?
Also, is the picture required for Wikipedia? Her name and picture is not included in Japanese articles since she was a minor, but I don’t if it’s required to have a picture on the page so I never deleted it.
I hope I don’t seem rude, I’m not sure how the website works and don’t want my edits to cause harm. If the new one has to be used, can we use the original photo of that picture? Sachiko124 (talk) 15:57, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. I understand your concerns regarding the previous image but that image, which was uploaded in Commons in misleading license, is considered copyright violation and hence cannot be used in Wikimedia projects including Wikipedia. Hope you understand. Toadboy123 (talk) 04:25, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Donald Bochkay edit
editYour edit was reverted (by you) for lack of a reference. It is on page 54 of Yeager's eponymous book. Here are the words from the book:
Don Bochkay was the old man. He was about twenty-five, a Californian who loved to tinker with cars. Silk panties or nylons were impossible to get in wartime London, and he had his mother send him some to use as bait. One night, five of us were in a West End pub getting drunk, while Ol' Boch made a play for one of the barmaids by giving her a pair of fancy silk panties. "Honey, "Boch said to her, "you stick with me and you'll be fartin' through silk." That line became famous throughout the entire Eighth Air Force.
I think that story and quote is an important part of anything about Donald Bochkay, especially since it was soon widely quoted in the Eighth Air Force. Tupelo the typo fixer (talk) 17:05, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for finding this. Initially, some users checking the hook about Don Bochkay looked into a book about Eighth Air Force pilots and couldn't find about the quote, and it had also had to be rejected. Glad that you managed to do it. Toadboy123 (talk) 23:12, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- Toadboy123
- I am very glad to have found it. I don't know how to add a reference, I can only add or edit text, I am hoping that you can reinstate the wording and include the proper reference.
- Tupelo the typo fixer (talk) 18:08, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- I have added statement and then added the reference using cite book template. Do let me know how it is. Toadboy123 (talk) 00:43, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- That looks good. Thanks. Since that quote was widely repeated throughout the Eighth Air Force, no mention of Bochkay would be complete without it. It also documents the wartime shortages in London.

If a page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. Replaceable non-free use File:David Stern pic.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:David Stern pic.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Thank you.
This is an automated notification. Please refer to the page's history for further information. DatBot (talk) 00:03, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
