Irish surnames

edit

Hi there, I've noticed that you've been adding people to the category "American people of Irish descent" along with sourcing about Irish surnames. A couple of things: first, please don't mark these types of edits with the minor edit checkbox--see WP:MINOR for more info. Second, we don't typically add a citation after a category. Instead, categories reflect information that is already sourced within the article. Third, to include this type of information, we need to have a citation that is about the ancestry of the particular individual at hand, rather than a citation that is about an Irish surname in general. For example, on Florence K. Murray, you've added a citation that says that Murray is a common Irish surname. However, the source isn't about Florence K. Murray. The fact that Murray is a common Irish surname doesn't show that Florence K. Murray herself is of Irish ancestry. There are many reasons someone could have a given last name--could be marriage, or that they changed it for whatever reason, or that they were adopted, etc. So we really need the sourcing in such instances to specifically state that a given individual has a particular ancestry. Let me know if you have any questions, thank you. Marquardtika (talk) 18:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Irish Americans

edit

Hey - just a quick heads up that there is a category called “American people of Irish descent” that we use instead of Irish Americans. For most of the people you’ve added Irish Americans, they’re already in the appropriate one. I noticed that your edits are still being marked as minor. If you’re not clicking on the check mark for that yourself, you may want to check your preferences (upper right corner of the page) to ensure that your edits aren’t defaulting to minor. Thanks! Ok, Thanks Larry. My mistake.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Billy the Kid, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Battle of Lincoln (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
