I’m Thomas Phinney, a typographer, font forensics specialist and type designer.

From 1997-2008 I worked in the type group at Adobe Systems lastly as product manager for fonts and typography, from 2009-2014 I was at Extensis where I did font management and web fonts, and 2014–2019 at FontLab, lastly as CEO. Particular typographic interests include OpenType and American Type Founders.

I was on the board of ATypI from 2004–2020 and again from 2023–present, currently as President.

My font forensics site is https://thefontdetective.com; my professional blog is: https://www.thomasphinney.com. I wrote a lot for an Adobe type blog at: http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography.

I also maintain an archival web site for the Empire board game: http://empire-game.org/

I've made hundreds of contributions to Wikipedia. In November 2015 I decided that I was going to leave and take a lengthy break, as the entire process had become too frustrating. I have returned just sporadically since.
