- Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia (talk) - encyclopedia of Ukraine, issued in the USSR. first volume in 1930. commissioned by Mykola Skrypnyk. only 3 of the 20 planned volumes were produced. printed copies destroyed, plans for the 1934 edition dissolved. "In early 1948, interest in the USE returned as a response the publication of the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies; an attempt to preserve a Ukrainian national heritage believed to be under threat by the Soviet regime in Ukraine. However work did not resume until after the death of Stalin. From 1959 to 1965 the first edition of the USE was published spanning 17 volumes with more than 45,000 articles. The foreword stated that the URE "should show fraternal unity of the people with a Russian and all other peoples of the Soviet Motherland" and that it is against "Ukrainian bourgeois nationalism", a reference to the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Studies."
