Matadayū (又大夫) was a Black man, possibly of African origin, who lived in Japan during the late 16th century (the Azuchi–Momoyama period). He was commissioned by the feudal lord Katō Kiyomasa to captain a Japanese ship bound for Manila. He had a wife and at least one child. A 2021 documentary on NHK misidentified him as Yasuke, despite the one primary reference to Matadayū, describing his being sent to Manila, postdates Yasuke's disappearing from the historical record by several years. Another Black man commonly mistaken for Yasuke is the unnamed cafre gunner reported by the Jesuits as being present at the Battle of Okitanawate.
