Southernmost point question
editReference is made to the private property just east of the "official" marker which is further south. The aerial view from Google Maps shows that the property has its own marker in its southwest corner (a flagpole with emblematic design on the ground). Should this be mentioned? According to the images on Google Maps, this property is a hotel, rather than a private residence, so there might be secondary sources on this. Related question: would this, therefore, be the southernmost commercial business in the 48? 136.159.160.5 (talk) 19:55, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Key West → Key West, Florida – Per WP:USPLACE, this should be moved. It is not listed in the AP Stylebook. Interstellarity (talk) 13:35, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Oppose - it's a place name, yes, but it's also an island/geographic feature. Nantucket is a standalone article, not Nantucket, Massachusetts, because it's an island. There is indeed Key Largo and [{Key Largo, Florida]], but that's a case where the island has multiple jurisdictions, so the state name in the title is needed. Per WP:TITLE, the title needs to distinguish the subject matter. This "Key West" is by far more notable than any of the other Key Wests. I'd only support moving if Kanye/Kim have another kid and name it "Key". ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:33, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink: Do you think Key Largo and Key Largo, Florida are good titles? Key Largo, Florida could mean the island or the CDP. What is your opinion on moving Key Largo to Key Largo (island)? Interstellarity (talk) 15:23, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- I think that it's a case by case basis. I came here for the discussion on Key West (As I have this page watched, nothing like being reminded of the southernmost point in Florida when you're stuck inside). As for Key Largo, no, I wouldn't support such a move. Islands don't usually have (island) in the article title. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:31, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Oppose This article covers an island, and not a random settlement. Dimadick (talk) 15:59, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- Weak oppose. I could go either way on this, but since it is an island in addition to a city, the title is fine as is. Rreagan007 (talk) 18:41, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
- Comment: If this article is supposed to be focused more on the island than the city, like the Nantucket article, the prose -- and especially the lead section -- should probably be written like it. e.g.
Key West is an island ... together with Dredgers Key, it constitutes the City of Key West.
Otherwise, you will probably get this kind of confusion regarding WP:USPLACE in the future. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:13, 19 April 2020 (UTC) - Split. There should be separate articles on the city and the island. See Simi Valley, California and Simi Valley (valley) for an example. The former can focus more on the societal aspects and the latter on the geography. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 16:28, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how feasible that would be since the island and the city constitute identical overlapping territory. Are there any examples on Wikipedia of an island and a municipality constituting the exact same geographic territory having separate articles? I'd like to see what that looks like if there are. Rreagan007 (talk) 03:39, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- The city of Simi Valley is almost entirely coterminous with the valley. The city does have a parcel of land in the Simi Hills to the south, but no one lives there so it's practically irrelevant to the city article. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 04:03, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Lack of any LGBTQ references
editThis article seems purposely purged of any references to the historical or present links to the LGBTQ community. Not only are these real and strong, but the migration of LGBTQ members, great artists like Tennessee Williams and Leonard Bernstein to ordinary gay citizens looking for a quiet life away from hatred, is responsible for bolstering the economy of the island to this day. I am not an amateur historian but many of you are and I hope someone will take initiative to add a well referenced section on the topic to this article. 108.7.160.150 (talk) 14:19, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- There are two issues to consider. First, are there reliable sources about the LGBTQ community in Key West? Second, if reliable sources exist, how significant is that community in the city? Note that the requirement for reliable sources is set in stone, the question of significance to and suitability for the article is subject to community discussion. If you are aware of reliable sources, you can add relevant material to the article that is supported by those reliable sources, with citations. If other editors disagree with the additions, then they can be discussed on this page (see BRD). - Donald Albury 13:27, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Southern most point question
edit"Key West is an island"
"Key West is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States"
These two statements kind of seem to contradict each other. It's either and island or "contiguous", i.e. shares a single border, but it can't be both. 2A00:23C8:4F2B:EA00:CAC:1D08:BE6F:606E (talk) 19:24, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
