Merge into Isometry and the purpose of this page

edit

The merge of this page into Isometry has already been proposed and it just failed, so I won't propose it again so soon. But I support this merge. This page has the following disambiguation links:

  1. Isometry
  2. Isometry (quadratic forms)
  3. Isometry (Riemannian geometry)
  4. Isometry group
  5. Quasi-isometry
  6. Dade isometry
  7. Euclidean isometry
  8. Euclidean plane isometry
  9. Itō isometry

Of these:

  • 2 redirects to quadratic form, a page which is not about isometries, although there is such a thing as an isometry in the context of quadratic forms,
  • 1 and 3 are the same page,
  • 4 and 5 might belong here, but they are arguably not disambiguating the term "isometry", and I doubt their existence is supporting the existence of this page,
  • 6 and 9 are specific examples of isometries, and I'm not familiar with disambiguation pages work, but either these ought to go (seems more likely to me) or all of the other pages about specific isometries ought to be added,
  • the pages in 7 and 8 should be merged.

In my opinion, the only pages supporting the existence of this disambiguation page (in the sense that this page is actually helping to disambiguate several concepts all called "isometry") are 1 and 7 and 8 (which should be the same page as 7). I think it might just be okay to not have a disambiguation page for disambiguating these two concepts; I think it would be more effective to just have them link to each other at the top ("Not to be confused with" template or similar). Frankly, the page Isometry group should probably be merged into Isometry. I replaced the link Isometry (quadratic forms) with Quadratic spaces, which goes to the correct section of the page. Mathwriter2718 (talk) 23:08, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can you provide the link to the merge proposal where it was discussed and rejected? Jay 💬 07:33, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
The fail to merge I mentioned was referring to your procedural close at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2024_October_25#Isometry_(mathematics). Mathwriter2718 (talk) 15:23, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jay I'm a bit confused: was the consensus of that that we should merge this page into Isometry? I can go ahead and do that if so. Mathwriter2718 (talk) 15:25, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I did not close the RfD, it was asilvering. At the RfD, three participants proposed the merge, and I agreed with them. Jay 💬 16:26, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see. I misinterpreted your support of a procedural close with the actual close because of the way it was separated from the other opinions via a relisting. Mathwriter2718 (talk) 01:00, 15 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
