Can we have a translation from the Spanish wikipedia? It has a much better article. SpencerT♦C 11:16, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The times and dates of the images seem to me extremely unreliable. I'm not convinced I've seen any of the May 6 eruption. The news casts just mix and match whatever they have at hand to provide exciting background. The external image link on the article page mislabels two May 5 MODIS images as May 6, and the beautiful still shot labeled May 6 [1]seems to match images from an airplane POSTED on May 5 to Youtube [2] I don't mean that the image is taken from the video, but the unique features of the ash column seem to match, so these must have been taken around the same time, and think this was the first or second day of the eruption.--L mammel (talk) 03:42, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The original image here puzzled me mightily, so I went back to the NASA source and have made a version that makes rather more visual sense - to me at least. The potential impact on the town becomes obvious from this angle... :-( Anihl (talk) 21:50, 10 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The eruption is continuing, and the only reason I know this is that I check MODIS every day. I don't know why this isn't news. To me, this seems to be an unusual and significant eruption. Anyway, I added a MODIS image to the article.--L mammel (talk) 05:29, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The whole thing kind of disappeared from world news after the Myanmar and China disasters. Anyhow, I've found some decent sources and started on adding some detail. Enough for one night. back later. Anihl (talk) 02:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Added some more and tried to hack out the shape a full article should have ... this approach means I haven't included all possible references at this point, but I'll get back to it in the next few days. I'm wondering about saying Puerto Montt is in the centre of the image, though - there are a lot of images out there, many of them public domain, and I might add some more later; if so, the text reference to the image might get unclear... Anihl (talk) 00:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think that's pretty much up to date ... I'm not aware of any significant change in the last week or so, at least. So I've removed the update template for now. Still a few references to sort out about the damage. I dropped the reference to Puerto Montt from the text and put it into the image caption. The reference to the city as the basis of disaster relief I think should go into the article on the town, which is a bit bare just now... Anihl (talk) 01:28, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

past tense

edit

The article talks about the form of the volcano (lava dome, two small lakes) in the current tense. These should be refactored to be past-tense, given their presumably unknown state of these given the new eruptions in May 2008. .../Nemo (talk) 01:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Got that. As at this week the dome is significantly higher than the old one, and the caldera floor is quite different, but the long-term shape remains to be seen. Anihl (talk) 02:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

First (?) Images of Burnt Forest from Ground

edit

During an unfortunately brief visit on 9 July, i was able to visit the burnt forest on the N flank of Chaiten. Possibly some of the first images of this area have been included on my website: http://www.photovolcanica.com/VolcanoInfo/Chaiten/Chaiten.html Have not incorporated in Wiki article due to conflict of interest issues but if a neutral editor agrees i think it could be added as a reference to the damage caused part of the article. The result of the move request was: page moved. Although there has been no discussion and this is reversing a previous move, the rationale is correct... this is the pattern for other similar pages, and consistent with policy, so it's a line call whether to move or relist but I'm hopeful the move will waste the least amount of time... could be wrong! Chaitén VolcanoChaitén (volcano) — Move due to current praxis of naming volcanoes in Chile either by their sole name or if the name is "shared" by other significant places to add (volcano) in the article name. Dentren | Talk 11:23, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
