"Pink Pony Club" is a song by American singer and songwriter Chappell Roan, from her debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023). It was released through Atlantic Records on April 3, 2020, and became the album's lead single after signing to Island and Amusement Records.[2][3] The song was written by Roan and her producer, Dan Nigro.

Background and composition
editAfter the release of her single "Die Young," Roan signed to Atlantic Records in 2017 and moved from her hometown of Willard, Missouri, to Los Angeles the following year.[3] According to an interview with Headliner, Roan was inspired to write "Pink Pony Club" during this period after a night at The Abbey, a gay bar in West Hollywood.[4] The song was written by Roan and music producer Dan Nigro.[5]
Release
edit"Pink Pony Club" was released on April 3, 2020. Four months after releasing the song, Roan was dropped by her label, Atlantic Records.[1] After a year-long break from releasing music where she moved back to her hometown, wrote songs, and worked jobs to fund her project, she resumed releasing her music independently in 2022.[6] "Pink Pony Club" was re-released in early 2023 after she signed with Island and Amusement Records and was included on her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.[7][8]
Commercial performance
editThough initially released in 2020, "Pink Pony Club" entered the charts in June 2024, becoming a sleeper hit, after the release of Roan's debut album and a series of viral live performances heightened her public profile.[7][9]
Music video
editDirected by Griffin Stoddard, the "Pink Pony Club" music video features Roan dancing throughout a bar in a series of rhinestone fringe outfits. Drag queens Victoria "Porkchop" Parker and Meatball appear as other nightclub performers.[10]
