Demonstrating Skirter: An End-to-End Computational Pattern Drafting Tool

Published: 30 July 2024 Publication History

Abstract

We demonstrate Skirter, an end-to-end computational design tool that converts a triangulated body scan into a tunable 3D skirt model which is then developed into a sewing pattern. Currently limited to skirts, due to their straightforward topological nature, our tool is a step towards democratizing pattern making of custom garments. By extracting level curves from the triangulated mesh, we can manipulate the length and volume of a 3D skirt as well as use the level curves to develop the 3D garment pattern into the plane. The development of end-to-end pattern drafting tools, alongside the commodification of body scanning technology, allows users with limited knowledge about clothing to produce well-fitting custom garments for themselves.
