Teaching computer architecture with a graphical PC simulator

Published: 27 June 2011 Publication History

Abstract

We have developed a full system x86 simulator for teaching computer architecture, with graphical interfaces allowing the internal components of the simulated computer to be observed and modified at runtime, and utilities for designing and simulating custom processors. In this presentation we show how we used the simulator in our computer organization and computer architecture classes to teach assembly programming, I/O, and processor design.
